Peer Advice: Finding Balance (My Favorite Study Break Spots)

One of the main pieces of advice that you’ll probably hear throughout your time in grad school is to maintain a healthy balance and to take time for yourself.

I agree with this and try to follow this advice myself, so I’ve collected a list below of some of my favorite places to grab a quick cup of coffee or unwind after or between exams.

Favorite coffee break near campus:

Two of my favorite places to grab a coffee between classes are MADE coffee in downtown Fullerton and ABLE Coffee Roasters by CSUF. Both offer a friendly environment with fun menu options to caffeinate as needed throughout the week.

Unwind in nature:

My favorite place to relax has always been the beach. If you’re up to drive a little, my top spots in Orange County are Laguna Beach (1000 Steps, Treasure Island, and Victoria are some of my personal favorites) and Newport Beach. Salt Creek Beach Park in Dana Point is another popular picnic location south of Fullerton and is perfect for sunset. Whether you choose to relax and watch the sunrise/sunset or choose to play Spikeball or beach volleyball with friends, the beach is always a great spot to clear your mind and escape for a little.

If you’re looking for more of a workout, some of my favorite hikes in the area are Crystal Cove State Park, Top of the World, and Black Star Canyon. The arboretum at CSUF is also just across the street from the main campus, so it’s an easy break if you don’t have much time but need to get outside and take a break from the library for a bit.

Other ways to take a break:

Working out is one of my favorite study breaks (and students have access to the fitness center on campus!). Regardless of your favorite workout, one of my best tips is to maintain a routine and continue to do things that help you destress—whether that’s hitting the gym, cooking a comfort meal, or watching your favorite Netflix show. Even if your schedule feels busy, take breaks as needed so you can take care of yourself and stay focused.

Best of luck this year, and I hope you’re able to check out some of my recommendations when you need a break!
