SCCO's OD/MS program

Why did you choose MBKU?

SCCO was my first choice because from speaking with current students, admissions representatives, and alumni, I determined that SCCO provides the most clinically driven, enriching, and supported optometric education. The optometrists I work with are SCCO alumni. They are such strong clinicians, explaining their findings and treatment plans with such care and compassion, which I believe speaks to the character of their education. SCCO has consistently strong board pass rates and a wide network of rotation sites, which convinced me I would have an exceptional academic education here. In addition, SCCO offers many extracurricular opportunities, including teaching positions, volunteer opportunities, and an OD/MS program. Coming from a large public university where you are expected to figure everything out on your own, I was also blown away by the individual support SCCO admissions offered. The Optometry Admissions blog and Summer Admissions Workshop made the application process feel very transparent and accessible. Student Ambassadors shared how criteria-based grading makes their cohort feel like one team. I thrive in collaborative and supportive environments, so hearing several students say that their class feels like a family was a great sign that I found the program I was looking for.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Intern or work at a practice to see the actual day-to-day of an optometrist and take notes of meaningful patient encounters. Work with a variety of optometrists (different specialties, practice modalities). Get involved in your school's Pre-Optometry Society. Upperclassmen mentors who have recently been through the application process can give some of the best advice. In your essays, highlight your strengths and explain how those will enable you to be a great optometrist. Be specific about why optometry is a great fit for you and what aspects of the profession you are passionate about. Talk to current students of the schools you are applying for to understand the class community and culture. Attend SCCO's Admissions Workshops and apply early!

Coming from out of state

Why did you choose MBKU?

I toured the campus a year before I applied and from my first walk on campus I knew it was somewhere I could call home. I loved the campus atmosphere and the surrounding community. The interview affirmed my feelings that this school was where I was meant to be. I was enthusiastic to share with everyone about my interview experience at SCCO and I didn't have that feeling with any other school I interviewed at. Eryn welcomed me by my first name as soon as I walked through the front doors. She actually read through my application before coming to the interview and got to know my personal story. Throughout the entire interview day, she continued to care about knowing me and showed interest in getting me connected to local optometrists. The interview itself was enjoyable and easy because the interviewer, Dr. Huang, and I connected; it felt natural and like she wanted to understand who I was as a person. I was so amazed and couldn't share enough about what a positive experience my whole trip was for me.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I could not stress enough that you don't have to be "smart enough" to get into optometry school. Some of the most successful people do not get where they are because of their intelligence. Hard work and diligence are often overlooked by students when trying to apply. Grades are very much a factor, but there are ways to be a competitive applicant that we as students have more control over. I would suggest reaching out to doctors in your area for shadowing experience. Don't just stop at one doctor, but shadow doctors of different specialties and in varying clinics. Working at a clinic is also valuable; it's not only beneficial for your career, but it also builds connections.

What are you involved in on campus?

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

If I'm not in the library with friends or studying at a local coffee shop, then you can probably find me being a social butterfly. I really enjoy connecting with others and meeting new people; I would describe myself as an extrovert with an extended social battery. I enjoy using my gifts of leadership and hosting to care for others. Recently a way that I have done this is by learning to cook and bake. It's not something that I excel at, but I find happiness in it because it brings people together and I enjoy the challenge of new recipes and techniques to master. Being active is also a substantial part of who I am. I enjoy working out at the gym, playing any sport or activity, and going on long walks. One of my biggest enjoyments is being involved in my church, spending time weekly in large gatherings, bible studies, and serving my peers and children in various ways. I love the opportunity a faith community provides to connect with, serve, and meet the needs of individuals and families in the local community.

Commuting during optometry school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO at MBKU because I felt more at home here than at any other school I visited. It was a similar feeling about how I felt at UCI. Walking around the beautiful campus and interacting with students who go there, I really felt like I fit in perfectly. The faculty and students at SCCO are truly unmatched in terms of friendliness and openness, and I wanted to be a part of that community so badly. Additionally, I spent my winter touring schools on the East Coast, and despite loving those cities, I could not bear leaving sunny Southern California.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My biggest piece of advice would be to always remember the bigger picture. At the end of the day, all our dreams are to become optometrists and to help our patients live better lives. Although taking the OAT and writing personal statements are extremely daunting and difficult, it will all be worth it in the end to achieve our collective dreams! Also, your GPA and OAT score are not everything. Of course, they will help strengthen your application, but what I've come to learn is that optometry schools are a lot more interested in your experiences and who you are as a person. Shadowing, working, and even just speaking to people in the field of optometry will open your eyes to what an amazing profession you're getting yourself into.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of the warmth and support I experienced on campus during my interview. Initially, I was drawn to the program for its proximity to home, but as I delved deeper, I discovered how thoroughly they prepare their students to become PAs. Ultimately, on interview day, I fell in love with the school when I saw the campus in person and felt the genuine care and commitment of the faculty.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Approach the application journey with a growth mindset, recognizing that improvement is a continuous process. There are many ways to strengthen yourself, both as an applicant and as a person, and personal growth naturally enhances your application. Be patient and give yourself grace, understanding that becoming a competitive applicant takes time. Each step forward, whether big or small, is part of your journey toward success

Being a career changer

Why did you choose MBKU?

Interactions with the staff and students have been nothing but positive. I'm seen and respected as a person, not just a number. Everyone I've interacted with has been honest and upfront with their experiences and thoughts. The school has a proven history and a positive trend in board passing rates. It demonstrates a dedication to self-reflection and a willingness to embrace change for improvement. The location is also ideal for me to see family and watch my niece grow up.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Communication is a crucial step in the process. Reach out to friends, family, students, or the admissions departments. Ask to have an objective perspective on your application and dissect any flaws. Be open to critiques and suggestions on how to address any shortcomings. Often schools aren't necessarily looking at perfection, they are also looking at your ability to recognize concerns and how you manage them. Have concrete evidence for your efforts. Gain experience in the fields that you are passionate about. The admissions department at SCCO saw and treated me as a person, not a number. They saw and recognized my hardships to get here. You're more than just a GPA or OAT score. Be honest and respectful to yourself. You have put in a lot of blood and tears to get to this point. Recognize your accomplishments whether you get admitted or not. If you are not admitted the first time, give yourself time to recover. When you're ready, consider different ways to improve your application. The most important thing is not giving up on your goals. Others will see your efforts.

Commuting during optometry school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO for many reasons! First of all, I loved the curriculum, clinical experience offered, and the externships made available to students as it made me confident that SCCO would prepare me to be an excellent optometrist. I also loved the aspect of the 'interprofessional education' offered at SCCO as communication with a patient's different providers is such a huge and important aspect of being an excellent healthcare provider! SCCO also offers so many cool opportunities for students such as the OD/MVS program where students can complete an OD and Master's in Vision Science concurrently. If you are interested in research or teaching in an optometry school one day this is an excellent program to learn these skills! I also felt such warmth and passion from all the faculty, students, and staff I met during at interview day. I could really picture myself as a student and it made me more excited than I already was to start optometry school.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My first bit of advice I have would be to shadow/speak with as many different types of optometrists as you can. In particular, I would do this for any optometry subspecialties that spark your interest such as low vision, specialty contacts, sports vision, vision rehabilitation, pediatrics, ocular disease, family practice, or private practice. It is amazing to see just how versatile the career is and where you could see yourself fitting into the field. It also helps you to build a network in the optometry community! I would also suggest getting involved in extracurriculars at school and joining clubs/organizations/internships/a job you are passionate about. These do not have to all be optometry-related, it is also great to also pursue passions beyond optometry to be a well-rounded applicant. It makes all the difference when talking about your experiences in school during interview day because you can showcase your enthusiasm for different interests as well as optometry!

Going straight from undergrad to optometry school

Why did you choose MBKU?

Having had the chance to interact with both staff and students, the community at SCCO felt closely knit and easy to reach out to. In addition to the convenient location, great weather, and friendly community, the school is well established, with its students that pass through SCCO having great success in national boards and in their careers overall. Students who go through the program at SCCO are well prepared to enter the field and have strong connections to classmates and faculty to support them throughout their careers. SCCO stuck out to me right away from how personable both students and faculty were on campus tours, in emails, and during the interview day, and they continue to do so even after being admitted. My interactions with the staff have never been short of great, and every time I'm even more reassured that I chose the right school.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My big thing is that a bad grade in the past can't be changed, no need to fret about it. Keep moving forward, use your motivation to become an optometrist to try your best in your classes, and show your proficiency in the relevant fields when you take the OAT. Get as much experience as you can to see if this is really what you want to do, and if it is, what about it drives you to keep pursuing it? Tell a story with your application. Don't focus too hard on a single bad grade, take a look at the bigger picture and assess where you feel you are. Let your application speak for itself! Reflect on these last few years and really think about the experiences you've had - both in the field and out - and how they've prepared you for a career in optometry. You've done a lot of work to get to this point, let that shine through in your application!

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO at MBKU because it stood out from every optometry program that I applied to. Despite being the farthest optometry school from Michigan, when I came for a tour following my interview I instantly felt at home and began to picture my next four years on campus. The faculty and staff were all so welcoming and made me feel less like an applicant and more like a future family member. While the statistics and curriculum prove that SCCO is an extraordinary choice for optometry school, what really makes SCCO stand out from other schools is the ability of their staff and students to provide a welcoming environment for future students. This not only makes for a smooth transition for students experiencing a big change (or move) into graduate school, but it creates a sense of comfortability that allows students to learn and grow alongside each other.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

It's very important to build an application that has strengths over multiple areas. For example, if your OAT score is a weak point, it is important that your GPA, involvement, and optometric experience show your strengths. Being a competitive applicant doesn't mean being perfect across the board. What it means is that you show the characteristics, ability, and dedication that will help you to become a successful student.

Being a career changer

Why did you choose MBKU?

Choosing SCCO was easy for me. Because I wanted to practice in my hometown in Orange County, it was paramount that I develop connections where I will grow my career. Although its close proximity to home helped SCCO secure a spot on my radar, it quickly became my first choice after attending the summer admissions workshop where I fell in love with the community. The student ambassadors and admissions committee did an amazing job welcoming me and supporting me throughout my application process. This was a clear indicator that SCCO cares immensely for its students (even prospective ones) and genuinely strives for their long-term success. Throughout my years of working with various doctors, everyone I spoke to about SCCO, whether it be alumni from decades ago, recent graduates, or current students, raved about their experience. It made me feel comfortable calling SCCO my future home for the next few years; I felt like a great fit for the community and the cooperative environment looked like a dream to me. On top of that, the great statistics on passing board examinations really secured the dream of being an SCCO alum.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

To prospective students preparing to be competitive applicants: be a well-rounded applicant and say yes to every opportunity within your means! Optometry is an amazing field that can allow many different career paths. Make sure optometry is the right fit for you and that you are the right fit for optometry by immersing yourself in different modes of practice. This can be done by working or shadowing in private or retail practices, volunteering with outreach programs, and more. If you're considering taking a gap year, take it. Use that year to really focus on gaining experience in the field, especially if you are having trouble finding time for it during the school year. The gap year is also great for studying and preparing for the OAT and applications, traveling with friends and family, and taking a well-deserved breather before jumping into a rigorous program. Remember that a good work-life balance is key to a successful career and a happy life. As for the OAT, take great notes in your prerequisite classes. They'll be helpful for review.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I am a huge advocate of a well-balanced work-life blend. When I'm not studying, I'm spending time outdoors and/or staying active. It usually consists of long walks with Sophie, my twelve-year-old chow chow. Otherwise, I'll be hiking with friends, in a spin or yoga class, or at the gym with my mom and brother. More recently, I have been reintroducing indoor bouldering and learning how to golf with my boyfriend. Birding has also piqued my interest lately and I am excited to learn more about birds. When I'm not listening to bird songs at the park, I'm listening to live music at concerts. My friends and I frequent concerts and music festivals. I enjoy spending time with others, so if I have a moment to connect with someone, I'll take it! Everything is better in good company. I also like to say that "food" is one of my favorite pastimes. Whether it's cooking for my family or eating out at new restaurants with friends, where there's good food and good people, there's definitely a good time. To unwind, cooking, reading, and journaling are my go-to activities.

Why did you choose MBKU?

While exploring the field of optometry, I was fortunate to have found myself interning, shadowing, and working for many SCCO alumni. Being able to hear directly from them about their quality of education, practice, and clinical experiences drew me to this program. My first ever optometric experience from an SCCO alum who specialized in dry eye care made me realize I was interested in a program that also offered the opportunity to learn different ways to treat dry eye, especially since SCCO provides an elective and research opportunities in this area. This, combined with being able to learn even more about the program from the admission events, persuaded me to choose SCCO.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

It is essential to seek out mentors who can help you envision yourself as the optometrist you want to become. Whether this be through shadowing doctors, through your employers, or volunteer events, it's incredibly valuable to see the many ways optometrists can serve their patients and the community. Being true to what makes you passionate about this profession will give you all the confidence you will need during the application and interviewing process!

Why did you choose MBKU?

From the moment I began researching optometry schools, I recognized that SCCO was a school that prioritized the success of its students and demonstrated values of community and collaboration. There are numerous resources available that support students even prior to attending school, including the Admissions Blog and virtual events hosted by both program faculty and Student Ambassadors.
Speaking to SCCO professors and students during Interview Day highlighted a focus on early clinical exposure and specialty training, as well as extensive club involvement and volunteer opportunities on campus. I knew that beyond providing an enriching education and robust clinical experience, SCCO fostered active and community-oriented providers and educators within the field of optometry.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Focusing on the aspects of optometry that excite you is essential to being a consistent and competitive applicant! Underlining your original goals helps to convey your passion to the admissions team and combats the fatigue you might experience during the lengthy and arduous application process.
Also, keep in mind that applications are reviewed holistically. As an applicant, my greatest insecurity was my academic performance in college. Always be sure to highlight your achievements despite anything that you might consider a flaw on your application.

Coming from Canada

Why did you choose MBKU?

At the beginning of the application cycle, I knew very little about optometry schools in the US. To make an informed decision I elected 4 main factors that I would look for in an optometry school. The first was high boards passing rates, which would indicate a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum. Secondly, I wanted a school that prioritizes early clinical experience since I know that I learn best by getting hands on experience. Thirdly, I wanted a school which has a welcoming student and faculty community. Finally, I took location into consideration and whether I would like to live in the city. In my opinion SCCO has everything I was looking for and more. SCCO consistently has high boards passing rates and a notable reputation for producing brilliant optometrists. Additionally, I was happy to hear SCCO values early clinical experience and allows for mentorship between upper- and lower-year students. Furthermore, students and faculty alike have been welcoming and kind. The close-knit community at SCCO has become more apparent the further I have gotten in this process. In terms of location, Southern California is a perfect fit for my lifestyle, as someone who loves spending time outside and staying active.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Some advice I would give to prospective students is to remember during the application process to relax, be proud of your accomplishments, and be confident in yourself. You have worked hard to get where you are and a lot of the time you can accomplish so much more than you think you can.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

Two primary reasons I chose SCCO were the students and alumni. As a prospective student, my interactions with SCCO students were always positive. Each student I met demonstrated the same respectable, genuine, and passionate characteristics I admire and hope to instill into my daily life as a person and future professional. Additionally, many SCCO alumni I interacted with were indeed experts in the field and more than impressive. Each doctor was exceptional, and all shared the same insightfulness in the profession.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Take opportunities when they arise, and be proactive. If optometry clubs, volunteer eye screening events, or general volunteer health care events are available, take advantage of those opportunities to explore the field and enhance your interpersonal skills. Being a 1st Generation student

Why did you choose MBKU?

-SCCO alumni that I have met and worked with were all very intelligent, loved the school, professors, and program, and are great with patients.
-SCCO had a larger class size compared to other schools, giving me the opportunity to meet more people in the same profession and make more friends.
-I loved the campus and how I can get to all my classes and labs quickly as the campus is small. (no worries about being late to lectures or exams!) Also the lecture halls were very pretty and Ketchum Health is an amazing facility.
-I wanted to stay close to home, friends, and family and I love southern California! (only 40 minutes from home). I already experienced being away from home in undergrad so I wanted to stay in OC where I can focus on studying in a familiar environment.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

'-Be prepared with possible interview questions that might be asked and practice for the interview.
-Talk to current optometrists and optometry students to gain the most information about applications, school, and career.
-Work experience is really nice to have not only for applications, but just to know what working in the field is like and what you might learn at school.
-Know why you want to do optometry over other careers and why you want to go to SCCO over other schools.
-Just because you do not have perfect stats do not shy away from applying. Just focus on your achievements you do have and try to create as many new experiences that you can include in your application.

Juggling family obligations during school

Why did you choose MBKU?

Participating in the in-person tour and advising session made SCCO my top school when applying. Being able to see students in lab and interns working at Ketchum Health showed how productive the environment is and the immense learning opportunity SCCO has for their students. The intentional layout of each building (labels on the wall and colored carpets to indicate each specialty), the intern and faculty interaction, and Student Ambassadors support really left an impact on me. The tour left me yearning to learn more about SCCO, thus checking out the live recordings and admission blogs on the website. I love how thorough and guided the resources were to help me succeed in my application to this program. I'm proud and so excited to be a new student at SCCO.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

1) Do not be afraid to reach out for help in applying if needed! There are so many people so willing and want to help. Whether it's the admissions team, current students, or faculty to reach out to, the program prospective students end up falling in love with is the one they know most about.
2) It's really easy to be overwhelmed with the checklist of things to do when applying (transcripts, GPA, prereqs, LOR, OAT, etc). I would recommend taking things one at a time, knowing that one thing does not affect the other.
3) While one aspect of your application may not be as competitive as the next person, remember that programs are looking at your holistic application. Additionally, the individuals who are looking through these applications are humans too! There's always an opportunity to explain unique circumstances and the admissions team understands that. Every applicant is different in their experiences and in what they have to offer.

Moving to Fullerton for grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

The simple answer is that SCCO was the first optometry school I learned about at the start of my optometry journey. My optometrist at UC Irvine blew me away with the level of care and support I felt as a patient which led me to ask about his career path. He described SCCO as located "up in the hills" and the more recent name update to "Ketchum". I walked away super interested in the profession and wanted to know more about the school that sounded like Ketchup. As I explored the profession more I worked with doctors from SCCO and attended SCCO's Summer Admission Workshop. The resources provided by SCCO along my application process served as the guideline for my entire approach to applying to schools and the ease of communication with Eryn and the support I felt along the entire application process carried into my application day which I consider to be one of the greatest days of my life! All the interactions and connections to SCCO made choosing the school as the institution where I would complete my optometry education very easy. Now as a student, I see the level of student support and pool of resources continue to carry through. Additionally, the history of SCCO offers many perks with offerings of over 80 externship rotation sites.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would advise prospective students to attend an admissions workshop at the beginning of their cycle and to make a game plan for their application timeline (when you will make a Optomcas portal, take the OAT, submit applications, etc.). I would recommend applying early, reaching out to admissions officers or student ambassadors, and making connections and shadow or intern with local optometrists. Finally, continue to pursue your hobbies and passions (I was a student-athlete in college!); include these on your application, and keep asking questions!

Being a career changer

Why did you choose MBKU?

When I began researching optometry schools, my priority was to find a place that offered a sense of care and community, supporting both my journey as a student and my future as an optometrist. I ultimately chose SCCO because it was the first school to emphasize how a prospective student's unique experiences outside of healthcare could serve as strengths rather than limitations. During an online information session and an in-person campus tour, Eryn provided specific examples illustrating how skills acquired in non-healthcare settings could be valuable in optometry. Hearing this directly from an admissions director helped me reframe my own non-traditional experiences in preparation for the application process. Throughout the cycle, SCCO consistently demonstrated this holistic approach in Zoom Q&A sessions with student ambassadors and on Interview Day. The kindness and warmth exhibited by the students and faculty I encountered further solidified my decision. Each interaction reinforced my eagerness to join and contribute to this supportive community.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My primary piece of advice on preparing to be a competitive applicant is to diversify your experiences! Engage in extracurricular activities that will not only facilitate your personal and professional growth, but also bring you joy. Seek opportunities that align with your interests instead of merely ticking off check boxes. Regardless of whether these activities lie within or beyond the healthcare field, each will equip you with valuable skills, broaden your perspectives, and prepare you to share unique insights in your essays and interviews. Ultimately, having diverse volunteer and job experiences that you can thoughtfully and passionately discuss will set you apart as an interesting and well-rounded applicant. Furthermore, dedicate time to thoroughly explore the optometry field by shadowing several optometrists from different practices. Shadowing provides a first-hand understanding of the profession while enabling you to determine if and why optometry is a career you wish to pursue. Discovering your “why” is essential, and remembering it will help sustain your motivation throughout the application process.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO because I have experienced the kindness and professionalism of the students and faculty who have helped me in my application. If the community of SCCO was so ready and eager to help prospective students who aren’t formal students yet, I couldn’t imagine how much more they would be there for students in their program! On top of this, SCCO’s excellence in the optometric program and their high quality of care towards patients showed me that they invest in both the optometric and interpersonal skills of future optometrists. I knew if I chose SCCO, I would have a strong, supportive community and an unparalleled optometric education that will equip me with knowledge, skill, and experience. As a third year, I can very confidently say I made the right choice!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Intentionally reach out and connect with the admissions officers, Student Ambassadors, and other SCCO students. Sending an email with questions to a student or setting up a phone call with the admissions team is a wise way to have your questions answered, get your name noticed, and to even build stories with interactions you have with the SCCO family. Also, please DO NOT COMPARE yourself to other applicants or students because “the fastest way to kill something special is to compare it to something else.” (Craig Groeschel).

When deciding which optometry program I was going to apply and commit to, SCCO has always checked off everything I was looking for: location, academics, and community. Graduate school is known to be taxing, but it was reassuring to go into a program that would support me both academically and emotionally. I felt this especially on my interview day when the admissions teams and current students answered any questions I had; they made me feel so welcomed and truly wanted to help me succeed. From my first day at SCCO as an interviewee, I knew that this was a program I can picture myself at for the next four years.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Highlight your strengths! I think it could be difficult remembering that you have so many accomplishments when you compare yourself to others, but don’t overlook them. Whether you overcame an obstacle, held a leadership position for a club, or maintained a high GPA, make sure to talk about what it took to achieve that and what you learned from it. Every applicant has different strengths and weaknesses so try to focus on yourself and what makes you stand out. Remember, the admissions team wants to know about you and your journey!

I was also super impressed with the Ketchum Health clinic and the amazing work they do there. As an applicant, the way that SCCO saw me and valued me as an individual showed me that they educate optometrists who do the same for their patients, and I immediately knew that this was the place I wanted to be for the next step in my optometry journey!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Being a competitive applicant requires being honest and reflective. Of course, it’s a great idea to work hard and get good grades and scores, but at the end of the day, what makes someone competitive is the person they are. In the way you write and talk about yourself, let your true personality and your passion for optometry shine through. Embrace the things that make you different, even your “failures,” and demonstrate how your unique experience has led you here. Your uniqueness is what makes you competitive, so you should be proud to show that instead of trying to do what you think others are doing too!

Applying to optometry school without completing a Bachelor's degree

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO because of its location, community, and quality of education. Growing up as a Southern California resident, going to SCCO would allow me to keep my circle of support close while also living in one of the greatest cities in the country. I saw the supportive community of SCCO through shadowing current students at Ketchum Health and attending online and in person events. The encouragement and collaboration between the students and doctors was something I dreamed to be a part of. The quality of education shown through the caring faculty, NBEO results, and support services ultimately finalized my decision to choose SCCO!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My advice for any prospective student would be to first decide on which optometry programs you are interested in. From there I would recommend researching what those programs value in a competitive applicant and their core values. I would then recommend creating a plan to strengthen these areas by doing extracurriculars you are passionate about. Once you come up with a plan, it is important to learn ways to manage time, work efficiently, and do your best in every area you apply yourself to.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I chose SCCO for the encouraging, communication-focused environment. I felt supported by SCCO early on in the application process when they offered me help before I was ever an official student or applicant. The faculty were all so welcoming and joyful on interview day it totally put me at ease. My main goal is to be someone who joyfully serves others every day, and at SCCO I knew I would be surrounded by faculty and students that emulate those same values.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Tackle the things that scare you a little. Understand areas of your application that are a little weaker and do not be afraid to reach out for help! In my experience lots of people are excited to help, but I know asking for help can be the scariest part.

Additionally, put the importance on getting better, not on results. Learning and becoming a better future doctor are the important parts, so put the focus there. If you study your best, do your best to serve others, and reach out every day, the long-term results will be a byproduct.

Being a 1st Generation student

Why did you choose MBKU?

SCCO has a well thought-out and proven optometry program as well as a long-standing reputation of being a top school in California. Staying local to be close enough to visit my family often is also important to me. Those were the prerequisites that I looked for in an optometry school that SCCO easily checked off, but what sets the school apart from all others was the wonderful sense of community. I loved the warm welcome I consistently felt from SCCO’s Admissions team as a pre-optometry student while attending anything SCCO-related. As I served on board for UCI’s pre-optometry club, U See Eyes, I had the opportunity to work closely with Eryn as well as a lot of Student Ambassadors. Not only were they the most communicative and organized people I have worked with, but every member of the Admissions team showed unmatched enthusiasm for optometry and SCCO. I have attended many meetings and events with the Admission teams of many other optometry schools along with SCCO, but I have to admit that SCCO’s Admission team members consistently had the most genuine smiles on their faces at every single event, and I would love to be part of such a joy! Witnessing their passion for the school both behind the scenes and during events/meetings truly sparked my own passion for SCCO, and I am ecstatic to begin my own optometry journey!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I think the most important thing is to go out of your comfort zone to interact with and get to know the Admissions team. The decision to brave my shyness and walk up to a Student Ambassador or to Eryn and Tom at the first couple of SCCO events I attended was something I am so glad I did to this day. It allowed me to understand that the Admissions team isn’t unreachable and distant, but they are people who genuinely want to help prospective students achieve their goals and clear any confusion. Learning this helped me overcome a lot of my social fears as a pre-optometry student in a new professional environment, and I was able to expose myself to so much priceless advice from those who have walked the path I strive to follow. Hand in hand with my first piece of advice, my second important advice for pre-optometry students to become a competitive applicant is to ask a lot of questions and listen to a variety of different perspectives to reach your own answers to your questions. To be a competitive applicant, it is important to have a strong passion and drive for optometry, but I believe it is also equally important to have a realistic view of the career before committing to it. As a healthcare professional, the requirements to achieve certification to be an optometrist is a huge financial and mental burden, so I feel it should be a priority to understand and be able to accept all aspects and different perspectives of the career regardless if it is positive or negative.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

When I’m not studying, I love to create art! I primarily do digital art on my iPad with Procreate, but lately, I have been enjoying working on a variety of crochet projects and practicing new crochet stitches. So far I have finished crocheting my very first bucket hat, a beanie as a gift for my dad for Father’s Day, and a plastic bag dispenser! I also love to cook and bake. I usually stick to cooking simple American, Japanese, and Vietnamese food, but I always love trying new healthy recipes. Aside from those hobbies, I also love to discover new boba shops and restaurants with friends and family, as well as play volleyball recreationally.

What has always stood out to me throughout all of my research of optometry programs and experiences speaking with OD students and alumni, is SCCO’s incredibly supportive and nurturing environment. From the students to the faculty and admissions team, I have always been met with a remarkably welcoming community of people, and everyone I have spoken to vouches for its sense of inclusivity and empowerment.

I am so incredibly grateful for the resources and tools that SCCO’s admissions team provided for me throughout my application journey. The most invaluable resource SCCO imparted for me was a sense of support and empowerment, despite me not even being a current student yet at that time. The amount of care that goes into all of the admissions events and correspondence made it evident to me that as an optometry student I would receive that same abundance of support and help!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Seek out diverse opportunities that align with your own passions and interests, whether it be optometry-related or not! Being a well-rounded and unique applicant is an advantage, so try to highlight your different strengths, which will allow for the admissions team to grasp your identity and capabilities. In addition, try to gain experience in different modalities of practice and optometric specialities, through shadowing/volunteering/working, so you can truly understand what the field has to offer! Please don’t be afraid to reach out to the admissions team, student ambassadors, and other current students— everyone is happy to help!

I chose SCCO because of the wonderful community we have here! It’s something you can feel in every interaction, and I knew SCCO was where I wanted to go just based on the comfort and warmth I felt during my Interview Day. It really does feel like a family here and everyone genuinely wants you to succeed, which is something I never really experienced before in my academic career. Every smiling face here is someone you know you can trust and who can support you, which is really comforting during the rollercoaster that is optometry school.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My advice to applicants would be to try to have a good relationship with yourself and let your personality shine through! Optometry school applications are yet another tough season in life, and it takes a lot of mental and emotional energy to pour your heart into something and still have the possibility of facing rejection. But through every step of the process, I think it’s super important to be kind to yourself and allow a space for your true self to shine. Being a competitive applicant isn’t just about the numbers and the scores and the GPAs. It’s also about determining who has the potential to be the best clinician in the future, and you can’t be the best clinician with the best relationships with their patients if you don’t have a good relationship with yourself!

The Student Ambassadors beamed when talking about their time so far at SCCO, especially during the lab demonstrations where I could tell they were all passionate and confident in the skills they were learning. Moving to Fullerton for grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

A variety of factors made MBKU my top choice. Ever since graduating from Chapman and moving back home to the Bay Area, I knew that I wanted to continue my graduate studies in Orange County. With my sister and friends nearby, I knew that I would have the support system I needed to thrive in a rigorous program. It was my interview day - when I talked to the student ambassadors - that solidified my decision. Hearing their experiences about how they valued the modular-based curriculum and the overwhelming amount of support from their peers and professors (just to name a few), made me feel like this community was the best fit for me.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Being a competitive student means going beyond the bare minimum requirements. It is essential to get involved in your community and give back through volunteering. Personally, I find fulfillment in working at local food banks and helping distribute food to those in need. Additionally, thoroughly researching your program before applying is crucial. I ensured that I met all the prerequisites, retook any expired courses, and even reached out to admissions to confirm whether certain classes would fulfill the requirements. Staying organized with deadlines and attending info sessions are also key to gaining insights into the program. Specifically for the PA program, it’s vital to have meaningful healthcare experiences. It is not just about clocking hours—it is about the depth of knowledge and skills you gain from those experiences that truly matter.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether it is hiking, skiing, or relaxing at the beach. Also, I have been having fun around the area whether it is day trips to LA or SD, or attending local events such as the OC Fair. As a foodie, I have been exploring the local dining scene by discovering new restaurants and breweries. I hope to share all my interests and local favorites with prospective students as a student ambassador.

Coming from out of state

Why did you choose MBKU?

As an out of state student, it was very important to me to pick a school that had a very welcoming and “family” type feeling. I interviewed for MBKU virtually and at the end of the day had such a big smile on my face because of the wonderful interactions I had with the staff and students. Even virtually, it was clear how deeply everyone cared about both current and prospective students. I was very interested in attending a module based program, and also felt called towards a smaller program that made student and faculty connections a priority. I wanted to be a part of the community that the school was creating, and felt overjoyed when I was offered a seat in the program. My personal values of supporting my community felt well suited at MBKU, and a year into the program I could not be happier with my choice.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would encourage prospective students to not lose themselves in the application process. As an applicant, I remember hearing the advice of “do whatever you can to set yourself apart so you can be remembered”. While there is definitely some truth in that, I feel that if you are trying so hard to be unique and memorable, you may lose sight of who you are as a person. If you cannot keep the core reasons of why you are pursuing this profession at the forefront, in efforts to be different, you won’t be able to prepare as authentic (or competitive) of an application. Remind yourself of your morals and reasons for applying, and stick close to those. Each applicant has unique and wonderful experiences to share just by being themselves, and I would advise prospective students to focus on who they are at their core. Being a competitive application means being well rounded and that looks different for everyone. Finding something you are passionate about can help you find your purpose and your “why” for applying; reminding yourself of that reason can help you create a competitive application because when you focus on that reason, you will be able to answer questions easily and authentically! Lastly, I would advise prospective students that the application process is a marathon, not a sprint. It may take a cycle or two to get the results you are hoping for. Pacing yourself by taking breaks to do things other than just applications is key! It will help you come back ready to work on applications with more energy and a new perspective.

Being a 1st Generation Student

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU was one of my top choices because I had heard so highly of the program from a friend that was currently in the PA program. MBKU also has such a top reputation in California. I absolutely loved how warm and welcoming the faculty were during interview day. I went to a CAPA event, where I got to see a lot of PA schools in CA compete each other in a brawl of some sort and I was so impressed at how the Ketchum team was performing and the amount of information they knew compared to the other PA programs! Some of the features that attracted me were the unique program structure, the modular-based learning, and the group exams. The small class size also appealed to me. Having grown up in OC, I also knew that many of the clinical rotation sites were great sites and clinics, which meant I could have a great clinical experience and hopefully gain a job offer out of that rotation!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Focus on your strengths! Don't try to be someone that you are not and don't tell admissions what you think they want to hear. They want to hear about your own background, and don't worry if it's not unique enough! Also try not to compare yourself to others! Be absolutely sure that PA is what you want and that you definitely see yourself practicing as one. Also ask yourself why PA over other similar careers? Brush up on and research the profession and current events involving PAs. Also ask yourself, if you can handle the stress of PA school! Show admissions all your efforts and put it all out there. If you don't have a competitive GPA, take extra classes to boost it up. If you don't have experience in multiple specialties, maybe seek more volunteer opportunities and/or shadow different specialties. Take advantage of online shadowing videos on Youtube! Try to move up in your current workspace and take on a leadership role if available. Any area in your application that you might think is not too strong, make the efforts to improve in that area! Also when and not if the times comes, talk to students from the program and see which programs you can truly see yourself at.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I like to go to yoga and do workout classes, run, bake/cook, travel, explore different food places, and watch movies!

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU has been my dream PA program since I first learned about the PA profession. When selecting programs to apply to, I was drawn to MBKU’s module-based learning and small cohort size. I also appreciated the requirement for interprofessional education courses with students from Optometry and Pharmacy, as I believe that early exposure to each other’s professions will be beneficial for our careers.

What truly convinced me, however, was my experience on interview day. I felt a strong sense of community and saw how the faculty and staff interacted like a family. I knew the PA curriculum would be challenging regardless of the program, so finding one with supportive faculty was essential. Now, after a year at MBKU, I can confidently say that the professors and classmates are incredibly encouraging and nurturing. Looking back, I couldn’t have chosen a better program for me.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Be well-rounded! Don't get thousands of hours of patient-care experience and then neglect to do any shadowing or volunteer work. Also, whatever you choose to volunteer for/ with, make sure you care about that population or organization you are helping, or else you are going to have a bad time!

Moving to Fullerton for grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU was my top choice when applying to PA school, and one of the main reasons was because of how welcoming, friendly and genuine the students and faculty were. Coming from a school like UCLA, where class sizes could be upwards of 500, I appreciated how close-knit the students were with each other and with the faculty. Every faculty member I interacted with was enthusiastic and dedicated to the students’ education and learning. Combined with the exceptional pass rates for board exams, this spoke volumes about the quality of the program and school.

Another reason I chose MBKU was that the values and mission statement closely align with my own. One of the biggest priorities in my life is compassion, and growing up as an immigrant, the cultural barriers and new society were often difficult to navigate. I remember being made fun of for the ethnic lunches my parents had painstakingly made, and how challenging it was to navigate the healthcare and school system. My experiences made me determined to become a compassionate being both professionally and personally, and I believe MBKU was the perfect environment for that.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

1. Being organized and prepared goes a long way. With PA applications, different programs are going to have varying requirements, admissions timelines, deadlines and interview processes. Looking up all that information ahead of time, compiling it into one place and then determining if you meet all the requirements is going to save you time AND application fees. Additionally, it gives you the opportunity to look into the program's mission and values, and decide if you would be a good fit for each other. At the end of the day, you want to make sure that this is a program you’re going to be happy at!
2. Don’t rush your personal statement or leave it to the last second. It’s a chance for the admissions committee to get to know you both professionally and personally, and for you to share your story, so it’s important that it is an authentic representation of you and your personality.
To go along with this, try to keep a log of your most memorable moments, such as meaningful patient encounters, times when you were struggling, and experiences that shaped your desire to become a PA. Having a log to reference is so helpful in drafting not only your personal statement, but also your secondaries and interviews as well!
3. Seek feedback from your mentors, advisors and peers. Having other eyes on your application materials is so beneficial in helping you identify areas for improvement. That being said, be sure to take advice with a grain of salt - everyone is going to have different opinions, so if you feel strongly about something, don’t be afraid to stick to your guns - at the end of the day, this is YOUR application.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of the location and support I felt from the faculty. Living and growing up in Washington my whole life, I was excited to experience something new and I absolutely love the sun so MBKU seemed like the perfect location for me to attend PA school. I attended a large competitive state school with sometimes as many as 1000 students in a class so I appreciated the smaller class size and the community aspect of the faculty and students at MBKU. As someone who worked in and considered different healthcare fields before settling on PA, I knew how important it was for healthcare professionals from different fields to collaborate effectively. I felt that MBKU's focus on IPE would prepare me to not only become an excellent provider but also an excellent member of the healthcare team.

Being a 1st Generation Student

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU has been my dream PA school from the moment I learned about their program and values. It was a natural decision for me and not just because I’m an OC native with an appreciation for MBKU’s exceptional reputation in healthcare education. For me, it’s about coming full circle—getting the opportunity to learn from the very best and serve the same community that shaped me. MBKU’s emphasis on compassionate care and lifelong learning resonates with me, aligning with my own belief in providing culturally competent care and treating patients like family. After attending multiple informational sessions through the CSULB Linkage Program, I was impressed by the amazing experiences shared by students and the support from faculty. MBKU’s commitment to excellence in the classroom, the community, and beyond is something I’ve always admired, and I’m excited to be a part of it.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My biggest piece of advice? Think of your patient care experience hours as an opportunity to explore specialties that genuinely spark your curiosity. It’s easy to get caught up in trying to check all the right boxes for your application. But try to remind yourself that it should also be about finding what you love, not just what looks good on paper. Whether you thrive in a fast-paced environment of an ER or feel fulfilled serving underserved communities, each experience will give you unique insights into the profession and help you figure out what you’re passionate about. This brings me to my second piece of advice when it comes to interviews. When you genuinely enjoy what you’re doing, it will help you stand out during interviews and that’s way more impressive than just having a checklist of experiences. So, don’t be afraid to explore, ask questions, and see what sticks. Your future self and your future patients will be glad you did!

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of its fantastic reputation in the community, friendly faculty and staff, and focus on excellence. I remember visiting the campus for Open House and being in awe of the passion and confidence with which the students spoke about their program. MBKU clearly prepares its students to enter the workforce as a competent and compassionate healthcare provider. Additionally, the faculty and staff go above and beyond to ensure each student is comfortable asking questions and seeking support.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

To be a competitive applicant, I would encourage students to be very organized. Investing time into the organization of personal information (e.g. healthcare experience hours, contact information, etc.) ensures the most important information is highlighted and represented well. Additionally, remaining organized prevents the feeling of being overwhelmed by the application process.

Being a 1st Generation Student

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of the overwhelming positivity I heard about the program initially from a family friend/alumni. After doing more research and attending open houses and discover events I was able to witness the care and thought put into the program by all the faulty and staff. It was an extremely welcoming and inclusive environment. Additionally, I loved the module based system which I felt was a great way for me to learn and digest the information. The cherry on top was the location of the program so I could commute and stay with my support system. My interview further solidified my desire to come to MBKU by interacting with the professors and current students who raved about the program.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would tell prospective students to stay positive through this journey. It can be daunting at times, but believe that they are able to do whatever they set their minds to. Also, make sure to do plenty of research on potential programs that fit them. It takes time and discipline, but everyone is capable! Give themselves plenty of time and start early. Furthermore, try to find ways to set themselves apart but that are also significant and important to them. Their passion will shine though in this way and will help them stay true to themselves.

Ask me about

Being a 1st Generation Student

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU was my top choice of PA programs from the start of my PA journey, and I had two great experiences with Student Ambassadors that helped solidify my choice. I was first introduced to the MBKU PA Program at a Pre-Health Conference at UC Davis while I was an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley. At this conference, I attended an event where PA professors, the director of admissions, and a current PA student from MBKU sat on a panel. The staff were all very knowledgeable and friendly, but what really caught my attention was the PA student, and how genuinely excited she was to be speaking on the panel. She had nothing but positive things to say about her experience as a PA student at MBKU, and often spoke about feeling supported, even through the stressful times. These sentiments were again expressed by the Student Ambassadors that were present on my interview day, some six years later. They similarly spoke about their confidence in the PA program and the staff, and how supported they felt while learning so much material each week. From these interactions with the Student Ambassadors, I felt assured that MBKU has fostered a great community whose goal is to help each and every student succeed. I also wanted to be part of that community and pay it forward to prospective students.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

The biggest advice I would give to prospective students is to try not to compare where they are in their PA journey to someone else's journey. I worked in a clinic where many of my coworkers were in the process of applying to PA school or other graduate health programs (optometry, medical school, etc.). It was hard for me not to feel dejected when a friend received an interview invite to the same school I applied to, or hearing that they finished their personal statement when mine was nowhere near ready. However, I learned to constantly remind myself that everyone is on their own unique path, and that, eventually, I will reach the next step, too. As a second-time applicant, I would like to remind prospective students that everything will work out in the end if they are truly motivated and work hard to achieve their goals. I would also like to help offer advice and share my personal experiences on how prospective students can strengthen their applications, especially if they are repeat applicants.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

When I am not focused on school, I like to find new food/boba/dessert places to try. I also like to hike on trails, or watch shows/movies. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family, crocheting and baking.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because it has everything I could want in a graduate school. Module based learning to help me focus, staff that truly cares about their students, close to home, and small class sizes.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would tell them I know it can be daunting because the thing is, at some point nearly everybody has the same stats. The best thing they can focus on is finding one thing that makes them be unique, and then to just be yourself. Ultimately, any PA program wants students who they know will be a good fit, and you won’t know if you will be a good fit unless you are yourself.

Ask me about

Being a 1st Generation Student, being a reapplicant, taking gap years, and which patient care experiences to invest in

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because not only did the school introduced me to the PA profession when I first started my journey to PA school, but it also taught me to embrace my own unique timeline and experiences. Most of all, I felt like I finally found a place that I belonged. I became friends with many of my fellow interviewees and felt safe to be my true self. I hope to continue promoting this feeling of support and embracing the differences that MBKU projects to prospective and current students.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

The most important advice I would give to a prospective student would be to embrace their unique experiences and to maximize every opportunity they have to interact with any professionals, not just healthacare professionals. I use to think I needed to get patient care hours through certain experiences in order to be competitive but I was wrong. A student can become a competitive applicant by truly maximizing every aspect of their experience, even if they don't have much yet. Being a fourth time reapplicant, I've met applicants that are much younger and older than me, and each brought different things to the table. Something I hope to teach future students is to be proud of what they have achieved so far and have confidence in themself. I've lacked confidence most of the time during my journey to PA school and it wasn't until my last cycle did I realize that if I had just truly believed in myself, my journey may have been a little shorter. I can offer prospective students all the trials and errors I did to become what I thought was a "competitive applicant," and help them standout by embracing who they are and not who they think they need to be. My journey to PA school was longer than I had anticipated when I first started. If you share similar sentiments, you're not alone. This journey can be rough at times, but it will be the strength you need when you're hit with different curve balls in life. Try not to dwell on the hard parts and keep looking forward towards what's yet to come :). It's never too late until YOU think it's too late.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I enjoy exercising, rock climbing, and hiking. Lately, I've been nurturing my green thumb and have grown quite a few plant babies to keep me on my toes. I'm still perfecting my propagation skills, but I'm glad that I'm finally putting my research experiences in transplanting plants to good use. I also enjoy cooking and cleaning. I love making food for people and seeing their reactions to my unique creations (such as making a delicious recipe from random left over ingredients in my pantry). Lastly, the older I get, the more I enjoy seeing direct result after putting in the effort, therefore, cleaning has become quite a stress outlet for me. It gives me just enough endorphins for me to get back into work mode and it hleps me keep my room straight. Nothing beats the feeling of hitting two birds with one stone when you are short on time :)!

What is a fun fact about you?

I am fascinated with bugs 🐛 🐞🕷️🐜. I’m a fourth time PA reapplicant, a first generation immigrant from Taiwan, and a first generation college and graduate student of medicine in my family. I’m a non traditional student with an unusual path. I was a biology major, had a 10 year gap year, and accumulated several healthcare experiences (EMT, phlebotomist, CNA, medical scribe, medical assistant, and clinical research coordinator).

Reappling after a different program I'd been accepted to had accreditation issues

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU for its commitment to excellence, collaborative environment, and service-focused curriculum. I wanted to stay in Southern California after graduation and serve our nearby communities, so doing rotations through MBKU will let me make connections with some of the local health facilities. I appreciate the academic rigor of our program and the above average results on the PANCE.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I encourage prospective students to take the application requirements seriously and also understand that their goal should be to exceed them. Although there are GPA or patient care hour minimums, I would encourage applicants to not limit themselves and rather fully engage with their classes or PCE job, as diligence in these ways can make them well-prepared to thrive in PA school.
Each person applying has their own history and experience, so make sure to apply with authenticity to your own story and a deep understanding of the university mission and why you want to be part of the MBKU community. Being a competitive applicant in the realm of PA school means you are someone who is studious, driven, personable, and well-rounded. If you can imagine the kind of reassuring, competent, and kind healthcare provider you would want for yourself or a loved one, that is the goal for how to live your life and expand your skills.

Juggling family obligations during school

Why did you choose MBKU?

At first MBKU was attractive because it was close to home, had an impressive record for PANCE pass rates, and the program was ideally organized with a module-based SPAS didactic curriculum. On paper, MBKU seemed like the best choice for a PA student. But during my interview, my goal changed from becoming a MBKU-SPAS student to becoming part of the MBKU family. That day, MBKU students and faculty showed me that MBKU is truly a family. Everyone was genuinely happy to be with the program and community. I was fortunate enough to interview at other programs, but nowhere else did I feel such a supportive environment as MBKU.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

The best advice in preparing the CASPA application, I think, is this:
Tie each part of your application back to how it helped you grow as a pre-PA or helped prepare you to be a PA student or future PA. This includes briefly explaining how each of your work and volunteer experiences impacted you or your PA journey.
Other advice I’ve learned from experience includes:
Don’t forget about interview prep! Take some time to speak your answers aloud, so you can ensure your answers are conveying the message you want them to. Body language, hand gestures, and facial expressions are also often overlooked, and if you’re not comfortable being interviewed, remember: practice makes perfect!
On interview day: take a few deep breaths before your interview session starts. Pause before answering questions. It’s ok to think about your answer before you start speaking. Organize your thoughts as best you can, and answer honestly! Be yourself; not who you think the program wants you to be.

Why did you choose MBKU?

All jokes aside with saying "I chose MBKU for the location", I truly chose it for its values and character. It's odd to say a program or institution has character but I believe all faculty and staff has created a personality in MBKU that is unlike any other school I looked at. The camaraderie between programs and staff and faculty is welcoming and truly reflects the collaborative work force environment

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Be you! Obviously having a robust application includes your experiences, LOR, personal statement etc., but with that you need to share with schools who you are and what you bring, not just a "competitive applicant" but a "competitive [insert your name here]". We all bring a different view in personalities, values, backgrounds, and experiences and highlighting that is important.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Do not focus about what you have not done but rather the accomplishments you have succeeded in. I feel like the biggest wall that most prospective applicants hit is that they feel like they are never good enough or that there are better applicants out there. And that is simply not true. Everyone has their own story and that is what makes each of us so unique. Wanting to be competitive is not only achieving good grades and having experience, it is putting your best foot forward and being proud of yourself and the journey you have been through up to this point, and letting schools know where you wish to take yourself from there.

Being an international student

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU for many reasons, and one of the main reasons was a small student to faculty ratio and small class sizes. Coming from an undergraduate experience at a big-sized university, my top priority was to find a program that can provide tight-knit community among the students and deeper connection with faculty advisors. I wanted be part of a program that has faculty members actively practicing in the field of my interest, to gain insights from and network. Fast forward three years, I hope to best represent MBKU and the COP as a current student and admission ambassador, as the former students and faculty have done to continue to embed the positive impression within the healthcare community.

Being a 1st Generation student

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU due to the sincere and nurturing environment I encountered during an information session and throughout my interview process. While it may seem trivial to some, the invitation extended by MBKU for my immediate family to accompany me during my interview for the College of Pharmacy profoundly impacted me. It conveyed that MBKU not only wished for my success but also genuinely cared about my well-being.

The authenticity and commitment demonstrated by the faculty and student ambassadors fostered an immediate sense of connection and reassurance regarding my decision to pursue a graduate degree at MBKU. The institution's strong focus on its mission statement, distinctive programs, vibrant campus life, and unwavering dedication to student success resonated deeply with my personal goals and values. I was enthusiastic about becoming part of a community that emphasized both academic achievement and personal support, making MBKU the perfect choice for my educational and professional journey.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I recently published a book called "Prescription for Success: A RoadMap to Limitless Opportunities." In the chapter titled "Things I Wish I Knew," I emphasize the significance of being kind to ourselves. During my academic journey, I often struggled with self-compassion, which negatively impacted both my mental health and academic performance. It's crucial for future students to realize that they can bounce back from their mistakes. There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to becoming a strong applicant; our success isn't defined solely by our academic records. It's completely normal to retake classes, seek help, and ask questions. I believe that resilience is key to being a competitive applicant, and part of that preparation involves staying connected to the reasons behind our goals.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

In my free time, I enjoy writing, value the moments I share with my family, and participate in activities that help me relax and unwind.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of the generous scholarships, small class size, and I could tell the people here get along well. Rather than being competitive with one another, they helped each other instead. That is why I chose MBKU as I wanted to go to a school that has a strong program, but also has a strong support system- we all in this together in the end!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Some advice I would give prospective students about preparing to be a competitive applicant is to be confidence in your skills and yourself. Being confident in yourself will open up a new ball field for you as it shows that you want something and you're actually doing something about it. Along with that, I would also try to gain some experience before applying/attending pharmacy school as it helps you understand more about pharmacy life and what you might want to do in the future.

Juggling family obligations during school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose to attend MBKU because I actively sought schools that were smaller in class sizes and in sunny California! Throughout my academic career, I’ve always been a part of incredibly large class sizes that I didn’t even get to meet half the students in my class. It was easy to be overlooked and dismissed. I felt that I couldn’t really make a difference or connect to my peers. I envisioned that at MBKU, I would have my voice heard and maybe even try for a leadership position.

Also, I was happy to see the implementation of Interprofessional Education. I know that the IPE pathway is for students to master their skills by taking part in various electives and opportunities to engage with other professions. I am particularly eager to apply myself in these types of classes due to the way I’ve been introduced into pharmacy. My journey to pursuing healthcare started from my brothers who are MD and DO, to my sister-in-law who is PharmD, to having friends that are PAs and Nurses.

Lastly, as a daughter of immigrants and a Southern California native, accepting others and embracing diversity is one of my core values. I can appreciate MBKU’s commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity for both the learning environment and to better serve my future patients.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

It’s such a breath of fresh air making it to the other side and now being able to call myself a competitive applicant who made it. Looking back, I was WAY too nervous but actually the interview truly felt like a conversation more than an interrogation. So as generic as it may sound, I would tell a prospective student to be themselves. I was so worried I wasn’t going to be good enough or smart enough but now that I’m on the other side I feel like I should’ve given myself more credit.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

When I’m not studying, I like to spend my time doing pilates, snowboarding, and taking care of my dog. I recently picked up golfing earlier this year and having just moved to Anaheim, I am so excited to check out some courses nearby. I absolutely love sporting events with friends. Food is also a hardcore passion of mine.

Going straight from undergrad to grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

There is a huge aspect of MBKU that stands out from other Pharmacy programs - the community/family feeling. I have mentioned it many times before, all other Pharmacy programs felt more/less a business environment. MBKU was the only location that felt truly welcoming to me.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

In grad school, stress is inevitable, the best thing you can do is organize your schedule. Applications are very time consuming and it feels like an endless cycle of writing/reviewing/editing. When I was doing my pharmacy applications, I wrote many personal statements before I felt like I finally had created one that was acceptable to submit. To avoid burning myself out, I would set aside specific time to review and adjust, and I did this for a couple of months. Every day you wake up you are a new person. An application you thought would be a 100% guarantee acceptance, might look significantly different the next morning. It's also important to get proper sleep and proper nutrient intake so your mind stays sharp.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

Study a different subject, lol. But for real, physical exercise. My hobby is driving many hours to a baron wasteland (like Joshua Tree) and climbing rocks. There is no better feeling than being far away from civilization and getting a breath of fresh air.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose to attend MBKU COP because the interactions I had with students and faculty were positive and left a lasting impression. The strong emphasis on the MBKU “Pharmily” showed how tight-knit the community was coupled with the camaraderie and respect between the current students and the faculty. I felt that MBKU was truly a community where everyone is eager to support each other to foster growth and success.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My advice is to go at your own pace with your goals in mind. Not everyone will walk the same path as you so there is no reason to constantly compare yourself to others. If you try to match someone else's pace, that may negatively impact your process.

I personally used the gap years to work in a pharmacy and gain valuable experience while giving myself time to recover from the loss of my dad. If I were to go straight into pharmacy school after undergrad like my peers, I am positive I would not be doing so well.

Being an older student with English as a second language and juggling school and family obligations

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of its proximity to my home community, as I am a mother of two and a caretaker to my older parents. I moved to Orange County when I came to the United States with nothing but the clothes on my back, and received an education from Cal State Fullerton. I knew that I wanted to continue my education here, and give back to the community that uplifted me. I also really appreciated MBKU's small class size, which makes for a very familial environment. I love being able to develop lifelong bonds with my faculty and peers.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would advise prospective students to not only try to maintain good grades, but also to develop genuine interest in their core classes. They are the foundation to what they will learn in future, and having a solid understanding and desire to further that knowledge goes a long way. I would also recommend to have previous experience in customer service, (if possible, in a pharmacy setting) as being able to communicate complex ideas and having interpersonal skills is essential in healthcare.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU for a couple of factors. The location was a big one, since my family lives around 40 miles away, so I could still visit and keep in touch with them without feeling so close. I also like the small class size because it means I will get more attention and help if needed. The staff and students were also very helpful and cheerful during my interview process.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

The advice that I would give to prospective students is to try your best in the pre-requisite classes, volunteer over a summer or a couple months (even if it is not paid), and to just be yourself. The GPA from your pre-requisite classes is really important, but it is not everything. Volunteer experience is also really important in terms of getting experience, not about the money to be paid. Finally, stressing over being the perfect candidate will only make you seem less genuine. The admissions people want to see who the person is behind the resume and statistics.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I enjoy playing my instruments and destressing through music. I watch a lot of sports (baseball, basketball, football, and others if it's on) and am very involved in the players and statistics they generate. I also like talking and hanging out with friends, whether that is in person with my MBKU friends or online with my high school/college friends. Their authenticity and dedication convinced me that MBKU was the ideal institution for me, providing a strong foundation for my educational and professional development.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would advise them to continue developing both personally and academically, as this is crucial for their growth as a student and applicant. At the same time, it’s important to enjoy the journey and the current stage of life they are in. The application process can indeed be daunting and stressful, but it’s essential to stay present and not become overwhelmed by future uncertainties. Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose to attend MBKU COP primarily for the small class sizes and the close-knit community feeling it fosters. The prospect of being in smaller classes appealed to me because they often facilitate more personalized and interactive learning experiences. Every faculty member and student I met was extremely welcoming and helpful during my initial campus tour and subsequent interview. This welcoming community feeling resonated with my desire for a more interconnected and collaborative learning environment. Being part of a “pharmily” rather than just another student in a large cohort enhances the overall educational experience and provides a sense of belonging and mutual support. Also, building meaningful relationships with professors often becomes more accessible, enabling me to seek guidance and mentorship tailored to my academic and career aspirations. Additionally, a smaller student body promotes a sense of camaraderie among classmates, creating a supportive network that extends beyond the confines of the classroom. After spending approximately 5 months at MBKU, I can affirm that every reason I chose this institution has been substantiated and remains true.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I’d tell prospective students to define their academic and career goals early to find the best school to fit their needs and design an educational path best suited for their success. Also, I think it is important to stay adaptable in the transition into school. Change your study style, apply for positions you wouldn’t ordinarily apply for, and try different styles of notetaking. I used to think I could only study by myself, but to my surprise, I found a group of classmates with a similar learning style, and now they are my study partners. We often compete to see who can get the highest A, which has been a huge motivation for me these past few months. This brings me to my next piece of advice: build a support system with people who can relate to the high demands of pharmacy school. The friends I have made in pharmacy school can relate to balancing school, work, family, and relationships in a way that my other friends cannot. Having this support system offers us a chance to engage in conversations about our daily lives, easing some of the mental burdens we carry and fostering a more manageable and positive overall experience.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

Outside my academic pursuits, I can almost always be found outdoors with my family and our cherished animals. Our little farm is home to a delightful mix of 3 dogs, 4 cats, 18 chickens, and 3 horses. The care and companionship of these animals take up a significant portion of my leisure time. Engaging with my animals on the farm serves as a therapeutic outlet, providing me with a valuable opportunity to decompress and unwind. The serene moments spent in the company of our four-legged and feathered friends offer a welcome respite from the demands of academic life, allowing me to recharge. During time away from the farm, my husband and I enjoy immersing ourselves in Southern California's vibrant outdoor scene. Whether hiking, paddleboarding, or discovering delightful local eateries, we are grateful for the diverse recreational opportunities SoCal offers.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose to attend the COP program at MBKU because of the distance to travel where it is close enough to home and I can visit my friends and family on a weekly basis. This school offers an abundance of opportunities to network and make connections with the organizations that have already been established i.e. CPhA, CSHP, AAPP. I really appreciate how close-knit and genuine the COP faculty are with their students. It demonstrates a sense of community and belonging for anyone that joins this program. It’s always reassuring to know that I’m able to go to any of the professors with a problem / question / conversation and to know they’ll make time to listen to what I have to say. The best part would be my classmates because we always plan for hangouts whether it be bonfires, barbecues or study sessions. I am absolutely honored to be part of the COP 2027 class and could not have asked for a better group of friends.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

All work and no play makes you a very stressed out person. It’s fine if you want to prioritize your studies and job (if you have one), but never forget to take a break. Imagine you’re driving: you’re gonna be able to get to the destination safely as long as you’re well-rested.
