SCCO's OD/MS program

Why did you choose MBKU?

SCCO was my first choice because from speaking with current students, admissions representatives, and alumni, I determined that SCCO provides the most clinically driven, enriching, and supported optometric education. The optometrists I work with are SCCO alumni. They are such strong clinicians, explaining their findings and treatment plans with such care and compassion, which I believe speaks to the character of their education. SCCO has consistently strong board pass rates and a wide network of rotation sites, which convinced me I would have an exceptional academic education here. In addition, SCCO offers many extracurricular opportunities, including teaching positions, volunteer opportunities, and an OD/MS program. Coming from a large public university where you are expected to figure everything out on your own, I was also blown away by the individual support SCCO admissions offered. The Optometry Admissions blog and Summer Admissions Workshop made the application process feel very transparent and accessible. Student Ambassadors shared how criteria-based grading makes their cohort feel like one team. I thrive in collaborative and supportive environments, so hearing several students say that their class feels like a family was a great sign that I found the program I was looking for.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Intern or work at a practice to see the actual day-to-day of an optometrist and take notes of meaningful patient encounters. Work with a variety of optometrists (different specialties, practice modalities). Get involved in your school's Pre-Optometry Society. Upperclassmen mentors who have recently been through the application process can give some of the best advice. In your essays, highlight your strengths and explain how those will enable you to be a great optometrist. Be specific about why optometry is a great fit for you and what aspects of the profession you are passionate about. Talk to current students of the schools you are applying for to understand the class community and culture. Attend SCCO's Admissions Workshops and apply early!

Career Changer

Why did you choose MBKU?

I was impressed by how student centered and innovative the program is. I could tell the program hears students concerns and caters towards those concerns. With every question I had about the program during the webinars, open houses, and student ambassadors were able to efficiently and thoroughly answer them. To be willing to provide this kind of support where admissions officers are literally pointing out what they are looking for in an application, being huge advocates for pre-optometry students, I can only imagine what kind of support is provided for optometry students at their school. All in all, it was the deep camaraderie that was evident between students and faculty that really drew me towards SCCO.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would advise students to focus on using your time meaningfully. There's no cookie cutter approach, but demonstrating purposeful engagement in your activities can significantly strengthen your application. Prioritizing depth over quantity in your activities. Seeking opportunities that allow you to gain genuine insight into the profession. Also engaging in research, community service, or leadership roles that align with your interests and showcase your well-roundedness. Don't neglect personal growth and interests outside of optometry. These elements contribute to your individuality and can make your application stand out. By thoughtfully investing your time and energy, you'll not only become a stronger applicant but also gain valuable personal and professional growth as admissions looks for individuals showing key characteristics that make successful students.

Why did you choose MBKU?

SCCO felt like the perfect fit for my personality and goals as a future optometrist, and I could really see myself being happy learning and growing alongside such a supportive community of people. Throughout undergrad, I had many opportunities to interact with SCCO. I was always impressed by their commitment to constantly improving the curriculum, demonstrated by the positive trend in Boards pass rates. What stood out to me more, however, was the warmth and support I was met with each time without fail. As a prospective student, I had received a lot of guidance from Eryn, the Student Ambassadors, and even faculty I met in passing while sitting in as a patient for my friend’s first eye exam. If these interactions were a reflection of the kind of dedication to education and welcoming support system I would be met with as a student, I knew SCCO would be the right choice to help nurture me into the diligent and caring clinician I aspire to be.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

The biggest piece of advice I would like to share is that you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. I would highly suggest joining a pre-optometry club if you can! Not only does it show your dedication to exploring optometry, but it is also a great way to find a community of friends with the same goals, which makes the journey a lot less daunting and a lot more fun! You’ll find yourself in an environment where you can easily learn more about the field and receive guidance from optometrist guest speakers, admissions officers, current optometry students, and even your fellow peers. The tips they share can put you on the right track to becoming a competitive applicant, such as how to immerse yourself into the field, how to plan your timeline, effective ways to study for the OAT, and more. And don’t be afraid to ask others for help, even outside of your club! As you get involved in volunteering, shadowing, or working, you’ll find that a lot of optometrists and mentor-figures are happy to share their insights with you. I am a huge proponent of learning from others’ experiences, especially if they have once been in your shoes and can now offer you the advice they wish they had known. But remember, you know yourself best! Be open minded when listening to others, but don’t be afraid to go with what feels best for you and filter out what does not resonate. Everyone’s timelines and experiences are unique, so trust that yours hold great value and don’t let comparison discourage you.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

When I’m not studying, I love spending quality time with my family and friends! Some of my favorite activities to do with them include exploring new food places, playing board games, going to concerts, and just chit chatting about anything – from discussing our personality types to reminiscing about our shared memories together. As an introvert, I also really enjoy spending time relaxing alone watching kdramas and travel vlogs or listening to music and podcasts while coloring!

Came from a semester undergrad (would be able to talk about the transition to a quarter system), Moved to Fullerton for Optometry school

Why did you choose MBKU?

SCCO was my top optometry school for various reasons! I love how the curriculum here at SCCO cultivates well-rounded optometrists by highlighting clinical experience and interprofessional education. I know that SCCO has the resources and opportunities that would help me become an amazing and confident optometrist. Furthermore, I loved how SCCO has a vast range of externship opportunities for our fourth year rotations. Above all, the warm and welcoming environment I experienced from current students, faculty, and staff members made choosing SCCO an easy decision.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My biggest advice would be to stay authentic to yourself by pursuing your hobbies while gaining experience in the optometry field! These hobbies help develop your sense of self and create discussion points that are very helpful during interviews or while writing your essays. They also help you stand out and become a memorable applicant. I also recommend shadowing various offices and learning more about the various specialties of optometry such as vision therapy, low vision, ocular disease, etc. Each specialty has a lot of new knowledge to offer and you can get an idea of what topics you are more interested in!

Why did you choose MBKU?

Signing up for the in-person tour and advising session made SCCO my top school when applying. Being able to see students in lab and interns working at Ketchum Health showed how productive the environment is and the immense learning opportunity SCCO has for their students. The intentional layout of each building (labels on the wall and colored carpets to indicate each specialty), the intern and faculty interaction, and Student Ambassadors support really left an impact on me. The tour left me yearning to learn more about SCCO, thus checking out the live recordings and admission blogs on the website. I love how thorough and guided the resources were to help me succeed in my application to this program. I'm honored and proud to be an optometry student at SCCO.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Don't be afraid to reach out for help with applying if needed! There are so many people so willing and want to help. Whether it's the admissions team, current students, or faculty to reach out to, the program prospective students end up falling in love with is the one they know most about. It's also really easy to be overwhelmed with the checklist of things to do when applying (transcripts, GPA, prereqs, LOR, OAT, etc). I would recommend taking things one at a time, knowing that one thing does not affect the other. While one aspect of your application may not be as competitive as the next person, remember that programs are looking at your holistic application. The people reading through these applications are humans too! There's always an opportunity to explain unique circumstances and the admissions team understands that. You got this!!

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU was one of my top choices because I had heard so highly of the program from a friend that was in the PA program. MBKU also has a top notch reputation in California. I absolutely loved how warm and welcoming the faculty and students were during interview day. I went to the CAPA Challenge Bowl, where I got to see the CA PA schools compete against each other in an academic brawl and I was so impressed with how the MBKU team was performing and the amount of information they knew! Some other features that pulled me in were the small class size, the module-based learning, and the group exams. Having grown up in OC, I also knew that many of the clinical rotation sites were great sites and clinics, which meant I would have a great clinical experience and potentially higher chances of getting a job offer from that rotation!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Focus on your strengths! Schools want to hear about your own personal background, and don't worry if it's not unique enough! Stay on your own path and try not to compare yourself to others. Brush up on some research about the profession and current legal matters involving PAs. Also prepare yourself for the stress that comes with managing your life while you're in PA school! Show admissions all your efforts and put it all out there. If you don't have a competitive GPA, take extra classes to boost it up. If you don't have experience in multiple specialties, maybe seek more volunteer opportunities and/or shadow different specialties. Take advantage of online shadowing videos on Youtube! Try to move up in your current workspace and take on a leadership role if available. Any area in your application that you might think is not too strong, make the efforts to improve in that area! Attend informational sessions and webinars to learn more about which programs best fit your needs, because you are also interviewing them. Talk to students from the programs you're interested in to better gauge the student life. :)

Juggling family obligations during school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose to attend MBKU because I actively sought schools that were smaller in class sizes and in sunny California! Throughout my academic career, I’ve always been a part of incredibly large class sizes that I didn’t even get to meet half the students in my class. It was easy to be overlooked and dismissed. I felt that I couldn’t really make a difference or connect to my peers. I envisioned that at MBKU, I would have my voice heard and maybe even try for a leadership position.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

It’s such a breath of fresh air making it to the other side and now being able to call myself a competitive applicant who made it. Looking back, I was WAY too nervous but actually the interview truly felt like a conversation more than an interrogation. So as generic as it may sound, I would tell a prospective student to be themselves. I was so worried I wasn’t going to be good enough or smart enough but now that I’m on the other side I feel like I should’ve given myself more credit.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO because of its location, community, and quality of education. Growing up as a Southern California resident, going to SCCO would allow me to keep my circle of support close while also living in one of the greatest cities in the country. I saw the supportive community of SCCO through shadowing current students at Ketchum Health and attending online and in person events. The encouragement and collaboration between the students and doctors was something I dreamed to be a part of. The quality of education shown through the caring faculty, NBEO results, and support services ultimately finalized my decision to choose SCCO!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My advice for any prospective student would be to first decide on which optometry programs you are interested in. From there I would recommend researching what those programs value in a competitive applicant and their core values. I would then recommend creating a plan to strengthen these areas by doing extracurriculars you are passionate about. Once you come up with a plan, it is important to learn ways to manage time, work efficiently, and do your best in every area you apply yourself to.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of its fantastic reputation in the community, friendly faculty and staff, and focus on excellence. I remember visiting the campus for Open House and being in awe of the passion and confidence with which the students spoke about their program. MBKU clearly prepares its students to enter the workforce as a competent and compassionate healthcare provider. Additionally, the faculty and staff go above and beyond to ensure each student is comfortable asking questions and seeking support.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

To be a competitive applicant, I would encourage students to be very organized. Investing time into the organization of personal information (e.g. healthcare experience hours, contact information, etc.) ensures the most important information is highlighted and represented well. Additionally, remaining organized prevents the feeling of being overwhelmed by the application process.

I selected MBKU because of its commitment to core values, its focus on small class sizes, and its genuine dedication to student education and well-being. During my interview, I was particularly impressed by the kindness and warmth of the professors and staff. Their authenticity and dedication convinced me that MBKU was the ideal institution for me, providing a strong foundation for my educational and professional development.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would advise them to continue developing both personally and academically, as this is crucial for their growth as a student and applicant. At the same time, it’s important to enjoy the journey and the current stage of life they are in. The application process can indeed be daunting and stressful, but it’s essential to stay present and not become overwhelmed by future uncertainties. Ultimately, there are limits to what can be controlled during this process, so focusing on the present moment is equally important.

Coming from out-of-state

Why did you choose MBKU?

All jokes aside with saying "I chose MBKU for the location", I truly chose it for its values and character. It's odd to say a program or institution has character but I believe all faculty and staff has created a personality in MBKU that is unlike any other school I looked at. The camaraderie between programs, staff and faculty is welcoming and truly reflects the collaborative work force environment.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Be you! Obviously having a robust application includes your experiences, LOR, personal statement etc., but with that you need to share with schools who you are and what you bring, not just a "competitive applicant" but a "competitive [insert your name here]". We all bring a different view in personalities, values, backgrounds, and experiences and highlighting that is important.

Why did you choose MBKU?

Already being a California native, SCCO has always been on my list of schools that interested me. After doing more research on the program, it is clear that SCCO has dedicated itself to developing the best doctors it can for over a hundred years. Being in the era of fancy new technology, I enjoyed that SCCO kept itself modern with a new clinical campus and learning tools to best help their students. This reassured me that I would be in good hands no matter how much technology alters the field of optometry in the next 4 years. I also like that SCCO is part of a greater Marshal B. Ketchum University community. Although a lot of my time will be spent studying the eyes, as a health care professional, I may run into systemic diseases or disease affecting other parts of the body. Having the resources and network of the Marshal B. Ketchum community at my disposal will help me become a more well rounded health care provider.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

For students who want to pursue a career in optometry, I would suggest finding a practice to either work, volunteer, or shadow at for at least a summer. I personally worked at a private practice for 3 years before coming to SCCO, and this opportunity is where I really fell in love with optometry. I truly believe a surefire way to know if you would like to pursue a career is to be exposed to it yourself. Optometry school is a huge commitment, and having passion and dedication (outside of the classroom) for this field will only make the application process so much easier. Having early experience in the field gives you plenty of material to write about on your personal statements and talk about during your interview(s).

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

When I am not studying, you can often find me running or playing board games with my friends. I also watch a lot of sports. My favorite teams are the San Francisco Giants, Golden State Warriors, and San Francisco 49ers (I know I am deep in enemy territory).

Going straight from undergrad to grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU for a couple of factors. The location was a big one, since my family lives around 40 miles away, so I could still visit and keep in touch with them without feeling so close. The small class size, especially for pharmacy, was much smaller than any other pharmacy school. My thinking with the small class size was that meant I was going to get more attention and help if needed. The staff and students were also very helpful and cheerful during my interview process.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

The advice that I would give to prospective students is to try your best in the pre-requisite classes, volunteer over a summer or a couple months (even if it is not paid), and to just be yourself. The GPA from your pre-requisite classes are really important, but they are not everything. Volunteer experience is also really important in terms of getting experience, not about the money to be paid. Finally, stressing over being the perfect candidate will only make you seem less genuine. The admissions people want to see who the person is behind the resume and statistics.

Why did you choose MBKU?

When I first visited the MBKU campus, the faculty and students treated each other with camaraderie and respect, which ultimately was what convinced me to apply. Everyone I met during my visits was kind and welcoming, and they supported each other in many ways: academically, personally, and professionally. Additionally, it felt comforting to be remembered on separate occasions amidst the many students. As a potential student, I felt that SCCO truly strives to foster a sense of family and community.

I decided to attend SCCO primarily because of the location, since I wanted to prioritize staying close to home to be with friends and family. I highly value those who've supported me in my journey and would love to continue sharing my progress with them. Recognizing the importance of maintaining these relationships, and acknowledging mental health, would allow me to better support others as a future healthcare professional.

I also learned SCCO's interprofessional education allows their students to become well-rounded individuals by developing their knowledge beyond their scope of practice. Even though I will be specializing in vision, it is equally important to learn about the systemic function within the body and practice effective collaboration with other healthcare professionals. I want to finish optometry school with confidence in my abilities to diagnose and treat patients, which was conveyed to me during my visit with students at Ketchum Health and through my own personal optometrist.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would advise students to not only maintain a competitive GPA, but participate in experiences that they enjoy and can develop personal growth from. When applying for optometry school, most admissions committees take a holistic approach when reviewing your application. Therefore, while grades and test scores are important, they are not the only factors that determine a competitive applicant. They not only want to see if you can handle the rigorous curriculum expected from graduate school, but they also want students who possess a genuine passion for optometry and service. This is coming from several factors that compose your OptomCAS application: GPA, OAT, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, and personal statements. I strongly recommend that you network with fellow pre-optometry students and admissions officers to see how you can improve your application and what they are looking for in an applicant. This is also to your benefit since admissions will be able to recognize you based on your prior interactions. Furthermore, shadowing as many optometrists and specialties allow you to expand this network and display your motivation to learn more about the profession. To display your interest to the school, you should take the time to research their curriculum, mission, and program offerings and utilize personal experiences to showcase traits that make you a good fit based on the school's core values.

Out of state, applying to Optometry school without a bachelor's degree

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU instantly felt like home! I have visitied SoCal every year from Utah since I was born, and it felt like the right place for me to pursue my optometric education. The faculty and staff and students are all welcoming and dedicated. This school has an excellent reputation for preparing students to be expert providers. Everyone here is on the same team!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Know your "why". For me, I think there is nothing more important and impactful than experience in the field you want to pursue. The smartest student may not be a great fit for optometry even if they "know" everything. I think it's important to see what the good and bad is in each field and decide if you love the good parts of it enough to work through the bad parts! Doing well in your pre-requisites and on the OAT certainly can help too!

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

Running marathons, watching an absurd amount of college football and any other sports, learning electric guitar, writing/producing music, puzzles, video games, catching up on TV shows that everyone but me has seen.

What is a fun fact about you?

I qualified for the 2026 Boston Marathon!

1st Generation, Moved to Fullerton for optometry school, Took a gap year(s) after undergrad / Previously worked at an optometry office

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO because it was the most welcoming and supportive optometry school during my application process. SCCO was incredibly thorough and detail-oriented during every aspect of the application cycle, and I truly felt that SCCO cares about their students and wants them to succeed. I also appreciate the encouraging and friendly atmosphere at SCCO, because everyone wants to help each other succeed and I still feel that now after finishing two years of optometry school!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would tell them to check out the SCCO Optometry Admissions blog, because there is a wealth of information available to them about any aspect of the application process that they are curious about. I frequently visited the blog myself when I was applying to SCCO and read many of the articles featured on the website. I would also encourage them to reach out if they have any questions, since everyone is enthusiastic to help them. I also emailed SCCO admissions and spoke to staff over the phone, so I have firsthand experience of how friendly and supportive the admissions team is about answering questions.

Why did you choose MBKU?

From the moment I began researching optometry schools, I recognized that SCCO was a school that prioritized the success of its students and demonstrated values of community and collaboration. There are numerous resources available that support students even prior to attending school, including the Admissions Blog and virtual events hosted by both program faculty and Student Ambassadors.

Speaking to SCCO professors and students during Interview Day highlighted a focus on early clinical exposure and specialty training, as well as extensive club involvement and volunteer opportunities on campus. I knew that beyond providing an enriching education and robust clinical experience, SCCO fostered active and community-oriented providers and educators within the field of optometry.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Focusing on the aspects of optometry that excite you is essential to being a consistent and competitive applicant! Underlining your original goals helps to convey your passion to the admissions team and combats the fatigue you might experience during the lengthy and arduous application process.

Also, keep in mind that applications are reviewed holistically. As an applicant, my greatest insecurity was my academic performance in college. Always be sure to highlight your achievements despite anything that you might consider a flaw on your application.

And having been at MBKU now as a student, I can say that it truly does feel like a family! MBKU does an amazing job creating a collaborative environment between students. Our faculty are always so happy to help out and treat us as future colleagues, which is super cool.

Why did you choose MBKU?

Two primary reasons I chose SCCO were the students and alumni. As a prospective student, my interactions with SCCO students were always positive. Each student I met demonstrated the same respectable, genuine, and passionate characteristics I admire and hope to instill into my daily life as a person and future professional. Additionally, many SCCO alumni I interacted with were indeed experts in the field and more than impressive. Each doctor was exceptional, and all shared the same insightfulness in the profession.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Take opportunities when they arise, and be proactive. If optometry clubs, volunteer eye screening events, or general volunteer health care events are available, take advantage of those opportunities to explore the field and enhance your interpersonal skills. There are many resources available waiting for you to discover.

Why did you choose MBKU?

SCCO is one of the main reasons why I pursued optometry. Every interaction I’ve had with the welcoming admissions team, kind students, and amazing faculty has left a prominent influence on me and my decision to apply to SCCO. I believe SCCO provides great clinical experience and an amazing support system. Seeing the strong community and bond that is built among the students and faculty has shown me the reason behind the excellence and kindness at SCCO. I am grateful to be a part of the program at SCCO because the well-developed curriculum and educational training environment will help prepare me to become the best optometrist I can be.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Never compare yourself to anyone else. You are more than just a score or statistic, so show off your accomplishments, experiences, and your personality! Standardized tests are not an easy feat, however, so remember to take the time to seriously study for the OAT. Improvement and effort are what matters. Be well-rounded, shadow different doctors, and be confident that you are ready to take on optometry school. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help, step out of your comfort zone, and take risks! Optometry is an amazing field with wonderful people who are ready to assist you on your journey.

Ask me about

Moving to Fullerton for grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

The simple answer is that SCCO was the first optometry school I learned about at the start of my optometry journey. My optometrist at UC Irvine blew me away with the level of care and support I felt as a patient which led me to ask about his career path. He described SCCO as located "up in the hills" and the more recent name update to "Ketchum". I walked away super interested in the profession and wanted to know more about the school that sounded like Ketchup. As I explored the profession more I worked with doctors from SCCO and attended SCCO's Summer Admission Workshop. The resources provided by SCCO along my application process served as the guideline for my entire approach to applying to schools and the ease of communication with Eryn and the support I felt along the entire application process carried into my application day which I consider to be one of the greatest days of my life! All the interactions and connections to SCCO made choosing the school as the institution where I would complete my optometry education very easy. Now as a student, I see the level of student support and pool of resources continue to carry through. Additionally, the history of SCCO offers many perks with offerings of over 80 externship rotation sites.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would advise prospective students to attend an admissions workshop at the beginning of their cycle and to make a game plan for their application timeline (when you will make a OptomCAS portal, take the OAT, submit applications, etc.). I would recommend applying early, reaching out to admissions officers or student ambassadors, and making connections and shadow or intern with local optometrists. Finally, continue to pursue your hobbies and passions (I was a student-athlete in college!); include these on your application, and keep asking questions!

Applying for OD/MS dual degree program

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because they seemed the most interested in seeing me succeed and providing me ample ways to achieve that. While the scores & the stats show that the students here succeed, the welcoming atmosphere and all the help I got along the way with the application made me feel that that level of support was something I could expect for all 4 years, and beyond.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would tell prospective students to not worry as much about the things you can't change, and focus on the things you can change to show that you've grown or learned from those challenges.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I love making things and giving them to friends and family—it’s one of my favorite ways to show I care. Lately, I’ve been crocheting a lot of baby blankets, which has been a fun (and frequent!) project. I also enjoy fermenting, and I've been exploring various kombucha flavors. I also try to stay active by going to the gym or taking spin classes when I can.

What is a fun fact about you?

I love learning random niche skills - I termed it my audacity that I can do any project I want, with little to no prior experience. It's how I've started to do things like sewing, working on my car & household repairs. Even if it's not perfect, it's something I've done myself.

Ask me about

Went straight from undergrad to optometry school, OD/MS Dual Program, Moved to Fullerton for optometry school

Why did you choose MBKU?

SCCO was my top choice when I was deciding optometry school because I had the best experience by far in terms of getting information about the school in addition to interview day. Interview day made such a good impression to both me and my mom who went with me that day. While my interviews in other schools were intimidating, everyone was friendly and I also remembered talking to the student ambassador back then during lunch time who answered all my questions about the curriculum and what fun things there is to do in SoCal since I was originally from the bay. Not only were the applicants friendly, professors and current students alike bring such a good vibe to the school and not the cutthroat atmosphere that I worried about in grad school. By far my first year in SCCO was the most challenging year in my life but also the most rewarding as I have made so many new friends!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Some advice I would give would be definitely to shadow optometrists and see what they do on a daily basis! If I were to apply again, I would have loved to shadow optometrists in different specialties and learn about low vision, vision therapy and medical optometry! I feel like I only heard about vision therapy once I was in optometry school and I really believe knowing more about the field of optometry will help an applicant out be more competitive in their personal statement and also in the interview! Other advice would be about OAT prep, and I believe OATbooster and Chad’s prep are some of the best resources out there in tackling that test.

What are you involved in on campus?

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

When I’m not studying, I like spending time with friends trying new boba and new restaurants around the area! There are so many good places to eat here in SoCal with all types of cuisine and I can confidently say there are more boba shops around here than in the Bay Area! I also like to go to the gym and if other people are free I also like playing badminton in the CSUF gym. At home, I love playing COD and Mobile Legends with my friends.

What is a fun fact about you?

I probably drink too much tea and a 90F sunny SoCal day won’t stop me from brewing some hot tea.

Ask me about

Taking a gap year

Why did you choose MBKU?

I was first introduced to MBKU during a pre-optometry club meeting. I was immediately captivated by SCCO’s educational structure and the resources designed to support students in becoming healthcare professionals. Eager to learn more, I attended in-person events, such as Discover MBKU, and had the opportunity to shadow at Ketchum Health. While shadowing, I observed third-year students working in the clinic under faculty supervision, which revealed the strong mentorship and hands-on learning environment MBKU provides. Moreover, SCCO’s commitment to continually improving its curriculum and maintaining high board pass rates stood out to me as an applicant.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to work alongside SCCO alumni and learn about their experiences in the program. Their insights highlighted how SCCO provides the training, support, and clinical experience needed to become an exceptional optometrist. The MBKU community has always been inclusive and caring–even when I was a pre-optometry student. Now, I’m proud to join that community as a fellow optometry student.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Confide in yourself and your ability to become a healthcare professional! Take full advantage of experiences that support both your personal and professional growth. Reflect on how your values and passions align with optometry, and consider the impact you aspire to make in the communities you serve.

I also encourage you to seek experiences outside of optometry whenever possible. While volunteering at a free clinic in the eastern Coachella Valley, I observed a wide range of patient interactions, gained insight into clinic operations, and witnessed the impact my team and other healthcare professionals had on underserved communities. These experiences broadened my perspective on healthcare and shaped the optometrist I aspire to become.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and dogs! I grew up baking and love trying out random recipes. You can also catch me playing pickleball, cheering on the LA Dodgers, making matcha lattes, or exploring art museums.

The emphasis on collaboration and well-being made me feel like I would thrive the most by being in this community.

Being a career changer, commuting during optometry school

Why did you choose MBKU?

When I began researching optometry schools, my priority was to find a place that offered a sense of care and community, supporting both my journey as a student and my future as an optometrist. I ultimately chose SCCO because it was the first school to emphasize how a prospective student's unique experiences outside of healthcare could serve as strengths rather than limitations. During an online information session and an in-person campus tour, Eryn provided specific examples illustrating how skills acquired in non-healthcare settings could be valuable in optometry. Hearing this directly from an admissions director helped me reframe my own non-traditional experiences in preparation for the application process. Throughout the cycle, SCCO consistently demonstrated this holistic approach in Zoom Q&A sessions with student ambassadors and on Interview Day. The kindness and warmth exhibited by the students and faculty I encountered further solidified my decision. Each interaction reinforced my eagerness to join and contribute to this supportive community.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My primary piece of advice on preparing to be a competitive applicant is to diversify your experiences! Engage in extracurricular activities that will not only facilitate your personal and professional growth, but also bring you joy. Seek opportunities that align with your interests instead of merely ticking off check boxes. Regardless of whether these activities lie within or beyond the healthcare field, each will equip you with valuable skills, broaden your perspectives, and prepare you to share unique insights in your essays and interviews. Ultimately, having diverse volunteer and job experiences that you can thoughtfully and passionately discuss will set you apart as an interesting and well-rounded applicant. Furthermore, dedicate time to thoroughly explore the optometry field by shadowing several optometrists from different practices. Shadowing provides a first-hand understanding of the profession while enabling you to determine if and why optometry is a career you wish to pursue. Discovering your “why” is essential, and remembering it will help sustain your motivation throughout the application process.

I chose SCCO because I have experienced the kindness and professionalism of the students and faculty who have helped me in my application. If the community of SCCO was so ready and eager to help prospective students who aren’t formal students yet, I couldn’t imagine how much more they would be there for students in their program! On top of this, SCCO’s excellence in the optometric program and their high quality of care towards patients showed me that they invest in both the optometric and interpersonal skills of future optometrists. I knew if I chose SCCO, I would have a strong, supportive community and an unparalleled optometric education that will equip me with knowledge, skill, and experience. As a third year, I can very confidently say I made the right choice!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Intentionally reach out and connect with the admissions officers, Student Ambassadors, and other SCCO students. Sending an email with questions to a student or setting up a phone call with the admissions team is a wise way to have your questions answered, get your name noticed, and to even build stories with interactions you have with the SCCO family. When deciding which optometry program I was going to apply and commit to, SCCO has always checked off everything I was looking for: location, academics, and community. Graduate school is known to be taxing, but it was reassuring to go into a program that would support me both academically and emotionally. I felt this especially on my interview day when the admissions teams and current students answered any questions I had; they made me feel so welcomed and truly wanted to help me succeed. Commuting during optometry school or taking gap years

Why did you choose MBKU?

I decided to attend MBKU because it was a school that put community first. Whether you're a student at MBKU or a prospective student looking to apply, MBKU student ambassadors and staff are always there to support you along your professional journey. Being able to support others is a key reason in why I pursued optometry. MBKU's uplifting community aligns with my reason for pursuing healthcare and was something I wanted to be a part of.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

A piece of advice I'd give is to start early. Getting a head start on all the requirements for an application will allow the entire experience to be a lot less stressful. Even if all the requirements aren't finished at once, slowly knocking away at the application requirements well in advance will allow for better focus on what comes next. By getting ahead, you will feel less rushed and have more time to focus on whatever you are working on.

Commuting during optometry school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO for many reasons! First of all, I loved the curriculum, clinical experience offered, and the externships made available to students as it made me confident that SCCO would prepare me to be an excellent optometrist. I also loved the aspect of the 'interprofessional education' offered at SCCO as communication with a patient's different providers is such a huge and important aspect of being an excellent healthcare provider! SCCO also offers so many cool opportunities for students such as the OD/MVS program where students can complete an OD and Master's in Vision Science concurrently. If you are interested in research or teaching in an optometry school one day this is an excellent program to learn these skills! I also felt such warmth and passion from all the faculty, students, and staff I met during at interview day. I could really picture myself as a student and it made me more excited than I already was to start optometry school.

What advice do you have for prospective students?

My first bit of advice I have would be to shadow/speak with as many different types of optometrists as you can. In particular, I would do this for any optometry subspecialties that spark your interest such as low vision, specialty contacts, sports vision, vision rehabilitation, pediatrics, ocular disease, family practice, or private practice. It is amazing to see just how versatile the career is and where you could see yourself fitting into the field. It also helps you to build a network in the optometry community! I would also suggest getting involved in extracurriculars at school and joining clubs/organizations/internships/a job you are passionate about. These do not have to all be optometry-related, it is also great to also pursue passions beyond optometry to be a well-rounded applicant. It makes all the difference when talking about your experiences in school during interview day because you can showcase your enthusiasm for different interests as well as optometry!

When researching optometry programs, I had two questions in mind: “Is this a program that will prepare me to be an excellent doctor?” and “Is this a program where I will feel supported throughout my journey?” — SCCO exceeded my expectations for both. I felt that the unique interdisciplinary education, depth and diversity of clinical experiences, and the collaborative environment would build a solid foundation for my training to be a healthcare professional. With regards to the latter, I immediately felt welcomed as soon as I stepped on campus for my Interview Day. Seeing how interconnected faculty and students were truly reflected MBKU’s core value of caring, and hearing testimonies from Student Ambassadors about the supportive and collaborative atmosphere between students was a major factor in my decision to enroll. Being a competitive applicant means doing everything with intention: find your “why optometry,” be cognizant of your grades and test scores, and appreciate every experience you have.

Your “why optometry” should be a reflection of you. When shadowing an optometrist for the first time, what did you notice? How did you feel? Was there anything that did not match the vision you have for your future? And ultimately— could you imagine yourself in the doctor’s shoes one day? Even when you think you’ve seen it all, and the answer to the latter is yes— keep exploring. Diversify your experiences by shadowing doctors in different specialties or settings, find opportunities to interact directly with patients, and don’t be afraid to explore other career options in the meantime. When choosing a career path, there is always a fear that we must rush into a decision to maximize our time gaining experience for that field. However, choosing to pursue any path takes time. After all, it is YOUR future, and you should do your due diligence to love optometry not just because you’ve seen everything it has to offer, but because you truly believe it is your best fit.

Your grades and test scores also matter, but it will never fully reflect how qualified you are to be a healthcare professional. Take note of areas of improvement and implement new study habits and strategies until you find your groove. Give yourself ample time to study for the OAT, and plan your course schedule so that studying for the exam will feel like a review of topics you have already mastered. Above all, be forgiving of yourself.

Ultimately, the entire process should be taken with the same care you hope to provide your future patients. By the time you are ready to join the cycle, words should flow freely to answer any OptomCAS prompt or any question an interviewer may throw at you. Know yourself, know your “why optometry,” and know that if you did your due diligence, you will end up where you need to be.

Why did you choose MBKU?

From my first interaction with SCCO and the admissions team, I felt so understood and welcomed before I even stepped foot on the campus. I was amazed by the comfort that I felt during my interview day and could instantly see myself thriving here. I was also super impressed with the Ketchum Health clinic and the amazing work they do there. As an applicant, the way that SCCO saw me and valued me as an individual showed me that they educate optometrists who do the same for their patients, and I immediately knew that this was the place I wanted to be for the next step in my optometry journey!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Being a competitive applicant requires being honest and reflective. Of course, it’s a great idea to work hard and get good grades and scores, but at the end of the day, what makes someone competitive is the person they are. In the way you write and talk about yourself, let your true personality and your passion for optometry shine through. Embrace the things that make you different, even your “failures,” and demonstrate how your unique experience has led you here. Your uniqueness is what makes you competitive, so you should be proud to show that instead of trying to do what you think others are doing too!

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of the prestige, vast network of alumni, and location. When applying to SCCO, residency played a big role in my decision. When speaking to Eryn during one of the tours, she was excited to hear me ask about residency. She shared how the staff works tirelessly to not only prepare us for board exams, but also to match us to our intended specialties. When researching schools, SCCO showed excellent passing rates compared to the national average. I was initially interested in the master's program and thought it demonstrated how much MBKU advocates for further education. Although I did not end up applying, it is an opportunity that should not be overlooked. Throughout my training at optometry offices, I came across many SCCO alumni. They were my biggest drivers in choosing MBKU. All optometry programs are difficult, but having optometrists who have been through it and still speak so highly about their experiences meant a lot. I was introduced to MBKU by a brilliant mentor eight years ago and have dreamed of coming here ever since. Additionally, Ketchum Health serves a largely diverse population that I believe would advance my skills and experiences in preparation for the field.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

One of my biggest pieces of advice is to embrace who you are throughout the entire process. When studying for the OAT, our performance reflects how accountable and dedicated we are to learning without external pressure from professors. It can be overwhelming, but study hard and take care of yourself as you go. When writing essays and interviewing, it is important to realize that the admissions team already knows you are academically capable. Speak on the struggles you have faced and, more importantly, how you were able to adapt and overcome. Graduate school has a way of breaking us down to our core, and despite all the resources we are provided, it takes a genuine passion for the work that we do. A competitive applicant may seem like someone with a high GPA and OAT score, but that is because achieving those requires discipline. There are many ways to demonstrate discipline beyond high test scores. Medicine itself goes far beyond discipline. It requires an understanding of the populations we serve, critical decision-making, and a demand for excellence. At the same time, applicants should not necessarily feel like they need to have their entire lives figured out before applying. MBKU offers us opportunities to advance and reach our higher potential, so we need to be willing and understand that we will be remolded over and over again. If you find that these values are reflected in your character, make them known in your application.

Why did you choose MBKU?

Having had the chance to interact with both staff and students, the community at SCCO felt closely knit and easy to reach out to. In addition to the convenient location, great weather, and friendly community, the school is well established, with its students that pass through SCCO having great success in national boards and in their careers overall. Students who go through the program at SCCO are well prepared to enter the field and have strong connections to classmates and faculty to support them throughout their careers. SCCO stuck out to me right away from how personable both students and faculty were on campus tours, in emails, and during the interview day, and they continue to do so even after being admitted. My interactions with the staff have never been short of great, and every time I'm even more reassured that I chose the right school.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My big thing is that a bad grade in the past can't be changed, no need to fret about it. Keep moving forward, use your motivation to become an optometrist to try your best in your classes, and show your proficiency in the relevant fields when you take the OAT. Get as much experience as you can to see if this is really what you want to do, and if it is, what about it drives you to keep pursuing it? Tell a story with your application. Don't focus too hard on a single bad grade, take a look at the bigger picture and assess where you feel you are. Let your application speak for itself! Reflect on these last few years and really think about the experiences you've had - both in the field and out - and how they've prepared you for a career in optometry. You've done a lot of work to get to this point, let that shine through in your application!

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO for the encouraging, communication-focused environment. I felt supported by SCCO early on in the application process when they offered me help before I was ever an official student or applicant. The faculty were all so welcoming and joyful on interview day it totally put me at ease. My main goal is to be someone who joyfully serves others every day, and at SCCO I knew I would be surrounded by faculty and students that emulate those same values.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Tackle the things that scare you a little. Understand areas of your application that are a little weaker and do not be afraid to reach out for help! In my experience lots of people are excited to help, but I know asking for help can be the scariest part.

Additionally, put the importance on getting better, not on results. Learning and becoming a better future doctor are the important parts, so put the focus there. If you study your best, do your best to serve others, and reach out every day, the long-term results will be a byproduct.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO because of the positive and welcoming environment. I may have forgotten the details of open house or my interview day, but I will never forgot how SCCO made me feel. I felt like I was already a part of the community, and everyone was so encouraging. I knew that SCCO would not only make me the best doctor but I would leave with lifelong relationships and experiences that no other place could give me.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would advice prospective students to research and be very familiar with the school they apply to or want to get into. I attended many virtual and in-person events for SCCO. Through these presentations, I was able to get insight into SCCO's curriculum, prerequisites, interprofessional education while getting to know the admissions team. Also, another aspect of being a competitive applicant is being able to support your passion for optometry with experience. It's very beneficial to have ample shadowing or volunteering experience so that you know what this career and lifestyle entails. Mainly, work hard academically, but don't compare yourself to others! Focus on what makes you unique and highlight that in your application.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO at MBKU because it stood out from every optometry program that I applied to. Despite being the farthest optometry school from Michigan, when I came for a tour following my interview I instantly felt at home and began to picture my next four years on campus. The faculty and staff were all so welcoming and made me feel less like an applicant and more like a future family member. While the statistics and curriculum prove that SCCO is an extraordinary choice for optometry school, what really makes SCCO stand out from other schools is the ability of their staff and students to provide a welcoming environment for future students. This not only makes for a smooth transition for students experiencing a big change (or move) into graduate school, but it creates a sense of comfortability that allows students to learn and grow alongside each other.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

It's very important to build an application that has strengths over multiple areas. For example, if your OAT score is a weak point, it is important that your GPA, involvement, and optometric experience show your strengths. Being a competitive applicant doesn't mean being perfect across the board. What it means is that you show the characteristics, ability, and dedication that will help you to become a successful student.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose to attend MBKU because of its supportive community, strong academics, and beautiful location. From the moment I first learned about SCCO, I was drawn to how much the school genuinely cares about its students and the early opportunities we get to work with patients. Even though it’s far from home, I immediately felt supported through their consistent communication, virtual events, and opportunities to connect with current students. During my interview day, everyone I met, including faculty, staff, and students, was so welcoming and friendly that it really put me at ease. I felt like I could ask questions, be myself, and really picture what it would be like to study and grow here. The more I learned about the school and the people in it, the more I realized that MBKU was a place where I could not only succeed academically but also feel like I truly belong.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My biggest advice to prospective students is to focus on building a well-rounded application. As important grades and OAT scores are, you should show a genuine interest in optometry by shadowing, working, or becoming involved in your local POPS chapter! Don’t let a bad grade or having to retake a class hold you back, because schools want to know that you are committed to succeeding and that you are capable of it! Additionally, I think that displaying your passion for other extracurriculars outside of optometry is important, being able to show how all of your experiences have led you to this field. Overall, let your application show how you have grown and developed a dedication to optometry!

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I love to watch new tv shows, workout, and play with my dog! I also really love cooking/baking and trying out new recipes. With my friends, I like to go on walks and go to different coffee shops, or just try new things!

1st Generation

Why did you choose MBKU?

There are four critical points why I chose MBKU SCCO:

1) Early exposure to patient care: Learning how to perform an eye exam by the end of our first year is incredibly exciting as I like the curriculum and how we get immediate patient interaction and the opportunity to apply our didactic knowledge.

2) Interprofessional Education: I know how crucial this is to be a successful healthcare provider as I constantly work alongside other healthcare professionals such as PAs, pharmacists, and ophthalmologists.

3) Diverse clinical outreach rotations: With over 80 outreach sites, the opportunity to customize the last year of our education and gain experience in different modalities of optometry is extremely rewarding.
4) Robust community and supportive faculty: The support and camaraderie amongst the students and faculty, and everyone’s passion for healthcare is infectious. From the application process to matriculating, the support from MBKU was infinite and a testament to the University’s priority for its students.

I truly believe that MBKU has perfected the recipe for educating and nurturing the most competent and socially driven clinicians and healthcare professionals.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My best piece of advice to prospective students is to sit down and take the time to intentionally reflect on why optometry. Although high grades, test scores, and accolades are advantageous, MBKU also wants to see genuine enthusiasm, persistence, and a deep understanding of what optometry entails. Clinical experience is valuable, not just to strengthen your application, but to allow you to check that this truly is the role for you. Working as an optometric technician gave me a valuable insight into patient care and the day-to-day responsibilities of an optometrist, so I was able to speak knowledgeably of my ambitions in interviews and personal statements.

Don't be afraid if your journey is not straight or ideal. I took four years after college experimenting with other careers, and I spent those years learning, reflecting, and eventually returning back at optometry with a clearer sense of purpose. Take ownership of your path, and demonstrate how your traditional or nontraditional experiences have prepared you as a more thoughtful and driven candidate.

Lastly, meet existing students and attend events whenever possible. Hearing real perspectives established more confidence in my decision and provided a sense of what I could expect. The process may be overwhelming and daunting, but take it in a step at a time, and if you focus on your "why," the passion will emerge and carry you through.

Went straight from undergrad to optometry school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose SCCO because of the wonderful community we have here! It’s something you can feel in every interaction, and I knew SCCO was where I wanted to go just based on the comfort and warmth I felt during my Interview Day. It really does feel like a family here and everyone genuinely wants you to succeed, which is something I never really experienced before in my academic career. Every smiling face here is someone you know you can trust and who can support you, which is really comforting during the rollercoaster that is optometry school.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My advice to applicants would be to try to have a good relationship with yourself and let your personality shine through! Optometry school applications are yet another tough season in life, and it takes a lot of mental and emotional energy to pour your heart into something and still have the possibility of facing rejection. But through every step of the process, I think it’s super important to be kind to yourself and allow a space for your true self to shine. Being a competitive applicant isn’t just about the numbers and the scores and the GPAs. It’s also about determining who has the potential to be the best clinician in the future, and you can’t be the best clinician with the best relationships with their patients if you don’t have a good relationship with yourself!

Being a career changer

Why did you choose MBKU?

Choosing SCCO was easy for me. Because I wanted to practice in my hometown in Orange County, it was paramount that I develop connections where I will grow my career. Although its close proximity to home helped SCCO secure a spot on my radar, it quickly became my first choice after attending the summer admissions workshop where I fell in love with the community. The student ambassadors and admissions committee did an amazing job welcoming me and supporting me throughout my application process. This was a clear indicator that SCCO cares immensely for its students (even prospective ones) and genuinely strives for their long-term success. Throughout my years of working with various doctors, everyone I spoke to about SCCO, whether it be alumni from decades ago, recent graduates, or current students, raved about their experience. It made me feel comfortable calling SCCO my future home for the next few years; I felt like a great fit for the community and the cooperative environment looked like a dream to me. On top of that, the great statistics on passing board examinations really secured the dream of being an SCCO alum.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

To prospective students preparing to be competitive applicants: be a well-rounded applicant and say yes to every opportunity within your means! Optometry is an amazing field that can allow many different career paths. Make sure optometry is the right fit for you and that you are the right fit for optometry by immersing yourself in different modes of practice. This can be done by working or shadowing in private or retail practices, volunteering with outreach programs, and more. If you're considering taking a gap year, take it. Use that year to really focus on gaining experience in the field, especially if you are having trouble finding time for it during the school year. The gap year is also great for studying and preparing for the OAT and applications, traveling with friends and family, and taking a well-deserved breather before jumping into a rigorous program. Remember that a good work-life balance is key to a successful career and a happy life. As for the OAT, take great notes in your prerequisite classes. They'll be helpful for review.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I am a huge advocate of a well-balanced work-life blend. When I'm not studying, I'm spending time outdoors and/or staying active. It usually consists of long walks with Sophie, my twelve-year-old chow chow. Otherwise, I'll be hiking with friends, in a spin or yoga class, or at the gym with my mom and brother. More recently, I have been reintroducing indoor bouldering and learning how to golf with my boyfriend. Birding has also piqued my interest lately and I am excited to learn more about birds. When I'm not listening to bird songs at the park, I'm listening to live music at concerts. My friends and I frequent concerts and music festivals. I enjoy spending time with others, so if I have a moment to connect with someone, I'll take it! Everything is better in good company. I also like to say that "food" is one of my favorite pastimes. Whether it's cooking for my family or eating out at new restaurants with friends, where there's good food and good people, there's definitely a good time. To unwind, cooking, reading, and journaling are my go-to activities.

Why did you choose MBKU?

A variety of factors made MBKU my top choice. Ever since graduating from Chapman and moving back home to the Bay Area, I knew that I wanted to continue my graduate studies in Orange County. With my sister and friends nearby, I knew that I would have the support system I needed to thrive in a rigorous program. It was my interview day - when I talked to the student ambassadors - that solidified my decision. Hearing their experiences about how they valued the modular-based curriculum and the overwhelming amount of support from their peers and professors (just to name a few), made me feel like this community was the best fit for me.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Being a competitive student means going beyond the bare minimum requirements. It is essential to get involved in your community and give back through volunteering. Personally, I find fulfillment in working at local food banks and helping distribute food to those in need. Additionally, thoroughly researching your program before applying is crucial. I ensured that I met all the prerequisites, retook any expired courses, and even reached out to admissions to confirm whether certain classes would fulfill the requirements. Staying organized with deadlines and attending info sessions are also key to gaining insights into the program. Specifically for the PA program, it’s vital to have meaningful healthcare experiences. It is not just about clocking hours—it is about the depth of knowledge and skills you gain from those experiences that truly matter.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of how welcoming and family oriented it felt when attending any MBKU event. After volunteering as a standardized patient, I witnessed a group of students from their didactic year to the end of their last year at MBKU! It was so clear how supported the students felt and how well MBKU has prepared them as future providers. The confidence and maturity that the students showed made MBKU my first choice!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Advice I would give to a prospective student would be to make sure you are a well rounded applicant! If there is a category that you fall short in (GPA, Community service, shadowing, etc) make sure to gain more hours or retake a course to get that better grade! Also, make sure you're involved in things you love! It is so much easier to write about something and let it show in your application when it is something you love to do; not what you think the admissions team will like to hear! Lastly, confidence is key! Having confidence in yourself especially on interview day will show that you are ready for PA school. Don't be afraid to show them how hard you've worked to be where you are!!

Why did you choose MBKU?

Hearing how highly the MBKU students at my CSULB pre-PA club spoke about the program and the faculty, MBKU quickly became my top choice. In addition to its great reputation, the systems-based learning style, mission and values, and location were key factors in my decision. During my interview day, I had the opportunity to meet the faculty and student ambassadors, and witnessing the dedication the program has towards supporting its students and cultivating a sense of community made me fall more in love with MBKU.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My advice is to be yourself. It can be so easy to compare yourself to others and feel pressured to become what you think a school is looking for. So, be your true authentic self and highlight your strengths. Trust in the process, and remember that no matter what happens, you will end up exactly where you need to be.

Out of state, 1st generation, took gap years

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU was my top school ever since I heard about it from a close friend who graduated from the program. She described MBKU as having a strong family feel, and she was right. When I began looking for schools myself, MBKU stood out from the rest. Every interaction I had, whether with current students, felt genuine and welcoming. There was a noticeable sense of community, and it was evident that MBKU is more than just it's academics.

The feeling was reinforced interview day. Nerves were calmed by the students and faculty making a clear effort to understand who we were behind our applications. Current students spoke openly about their experiences, sharing both the challenges and what helped them succeed, making it feel more authentic. It was clear that MBKU is invested in pushing their students to succeed in all aspects.

The sense of connection carried on throughout the acceptance process and now with my amazing cohort. I am truly grateful to have the chance to be part of a program that feels both challenging yet deeply supportive.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

We all understand how difficult it is to get into PA school and how easy it can be easy getting lost in trying to write the perfect essay or gaining PCE. However, don't just chase experiences because you think they'll look good on paper or check a box. Use this time to genuinely explore different areas of healthcare and find what resonates with you. When you're truly invested in something your passion will naturally show with it, and that is something admissions committees notice.

Also, be patient with yourself. The path to PA school isn't always straightforward. You might take several gap years, switch careers, or face setbacks, and that its okay! What matters is how you use those experiences to grow. The authenticity is what will make your application stand out from the rest.

Why did you choose MBKU?

First, the people. During my interview, I genuinely enjoyed every interaction I had with both staff and students. Everyone seemed happy to be part of the program, and it was clear that the faculty truly cared about their students, more so than at any other school I interviewed with. The more I have gotten to know faculty, students, and my cohort it has reaffirmed that MBKU strives to make everyone feel like they are part of a family.

Second, the academics. As I learned more about MBKU’s academic model and testing schedule, it became clear that it was a great fit for my learning style. I appreciated that despite its academic rigor, the program still encourages students to maintain balance and have time outside of school to grow as well-rounded individuals.

Lastly, the location. When deciding between programs I wanted to pick a location with a mix of fun things to do nearby while also being close to my support system in southern California.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

It's easy when applying to stress out about your PCE or GPA but I think the most important aspect of your application is your personal statement and supplemental essays. It's a massive piece of your application that you can positively impact, even days before you submit your application, if you take the time to really work on it. Start it as early as possible and ask for feedback! I went through numerous variations before I finally stuck with a personal statement that captured what I wanted. Also for interviews don't be afraid to be yourself!

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU has always been my top choice for PA school. I went to CSUF, across the street from campus, and I was part of their pre-PA program. I had the opportunity to hear about MBKU and learn about their program and what they are looking for in their prospective students. After conducting my own research, I liked how MBKU has a smaller class size and emphasizes a family-like atmosphere. I am drawn to an environment where I can work closely with faculty and my peers. I was also able to communicate with multiple students who spoke highly of the campus and faculty. After my interview, this reaffirmed my decision to proceed with choosing MBKU because of the friendly and welcoming environment I was in.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My first advice for prospective students is to be resilient. There will be challenges throughout your journey, but it is important to be able to stay positive and persevere. Second, make sure you are thoroughly researching your programs to not only ensure you meet their requirements but that they meet your values as well. I made sure that I retook any expired courses, met all of the pre-requisite requirements, and had enough patient care experience. Third, be open to constructive criticism. It was very beneficial to have feedback from others regarding my application and areas where I could improve on.

1st Generation

Why did you choose MBKU?

I was initially drawn to the program's location. Being born and raised in Los Angeles, inevitably, my support system is in LA. Anticipating PA school to be a rigorous and trying time of my life, I wanted to make sure I had my support system close by yet far enough to not be distracted.

After further research into MBKU's program, I appreciated MBKU's teaching style. I acquired my patient care hours working in different specialties so MBKU's systems-based modules approach made a lot of sense to me. Also, MBKU's small student to faculty ratio assured me that I would get ample academic support.

However, it was after meeting current students and faculty that I committed to this program. All of the students and faculty are incredibly kind, caring, and organized. It felt right to learn how to care for others at an institution that cared for its students well.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I think it is important to stick to the basics as much as possible (high GPA, ample direct patient care hours, shadowing, etc.). However, I believe it is equally important to explore your own interests within the healthcare field as you accumulate your patient care and shadowing hours. For example, work in different specialties with diverse demographics and shadow a variety of healthcare professionals (i.e. PAs, NPs, physicians, nurses, etc.) to learn what you enjoy. This will help you find your own motivation for being a PA and that motivation will keep you grounded through the inevitable highs and lows of the application process.

Also, if you are taking gap years, it is helpful to keep a log of everything you did, memorable moments/patients, lessons learned, traits of a good provider that you want to emulate, etc. to look back on during the application process. This will not only help you fill out the CASPA application but also be a good starting place for all the supplemental essays you will end up writing.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I enjoy spending time with friends & family regularly! However, I am also a serial hobbyist so I had my stints of barre, yoga, pickleball, hiking, bouldering, and ceramics. My current pastimes are running, camping, and cooking (...or at least trying to)!

Why did you choose MBKU?

The number one aspect that made MBKU stand out to me was their authentic sense of community. After my interview day, I was amazed at the personalized relationships the professors and staff made with both their prospective and admitted students! MBKU was the only school that asked about my passions outside of medicine. That showed me how much they care about me as a person and not just another applicant.

Next, the curriculum for MBKU’s PA program is unique! Its pass/fail grading system solidifies a non-competitive environment, the multidisciplinary heath center allows collaboration with optometry and pharmacy, and there are constant adjustments made to better serve their students.

Lastly, MBKU matches my values. My goal is to serve clinically underserved populations as a PA. MBKU’s mission statement prioritized that. Studying at MBKU also allows me to be near my loved ones!

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I strongly advise prospective students to be involved in service and make yourself a well-rounded student! Don't just focus on numbers such as GPA and experience hours.

Be resilient! Being a competitive applicant means you have to be strong-willed in pursuing your goal. It is imperative to know that rejection is not representative of you as an applicant and all the hard work you have done! Be steadfast in your journey and it will pay off.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

There are three points of advice that I would give to prospective students: do activities that make you a whole human, don't be afraid to be great, and lastly do not get down on denials, it only takes one yes to realize your goals.

Being a 1st Generation Student

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of the overwhelming positivity I heard about the program initially from a family friend/alumni. After doing more research and attending open houses and discover events I was able to witness the care and thought put into the program by all the faulty and staff. It was an extremely welcoming and inclusive environment. Additionally, I loved the module based system which I felt was a great way for me to learn and digest the information. The cherry on top was the location of the program so I could commute and stay with my support system. My interview further solidified my desire to come to MBKU by interacting with the professors and current students who raved about the program.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would tell prospective students to stay positive through this journey. It can be daunting at times, but believe that they are able to do whatever they set their minds to. Also, make sure to do plenty of research on potential programs that fit them. It takes time and discipline, but everyone is capable! Give themselves plenty of time and start early. Furthermore, try to find ways to set themselves apart but that are also significant and important to them. Their passion will shine though in this way and will help them stay true to themselves.

1st generation, explaining MBKU PA curriculum (since I worked at MBKU), demonstrating anatomage/passing on knowledge of the table

Why did you choose MBKU?

MBKU was an obvious choice for me due to its small class size, commitment to serving the community, excellent PANCE results, and module-based education. However, the main reason was because MBKU felt like home. The faculty are beyond kind and the past/current students are so eager to help you out wherever they can. Everyone at MBKU is genuinely rooting for your success.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

1. Gain as much medical experience as possible! Do not try to rush the process just by achieving the required hours. Truly immerse yourself in your medical jobs/experiences to learn and understand the world of medicine along with the PA career.

2. Just be yourself during the application and interview process. There are no right or perfect answers. Authenticity will make you stand out and show your uniqueness.

3. Enjoy the process! Applying to PA school is stressful, but take it as a challenge you can conquer. Your hard work will pay off!

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because it has everything I could want in a graduate school. Module based learning to help me focus, staff that truly cares about their students, close to home, and small class sizes.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would tell them I know it can be daunting because the thing is, at some point nearly everybody has the same stats. The best thing they can focus on is finding one thing that makes them be unique, and then to just be yourself. Ultimately, any PA program wants students who they know will be a good fit, and you won’t know if you will be a good fit unless you are yourself.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU for its commitment to excellence, collaborative environment, and service-focused curriculum. I wanted to stay in Southern California after graduation and serve our nearby communities, so doing rotations through MBKU will let me make connections with some of the local health facilities. I appreciate the academic rigor of our program and the above average results on the PANCE.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I encourage prospective students to take the application requirements seriously and also understand that their goal should be to exceed them. Although there are GPA or patient care hour minimums, I would encourage applicants to not limit themselves and rather fully engage with their classes or PCE job, as diligence in these ways can make them well-prepared to thrive in PA school.
Each person applying has their own history and experience, so make sure to apply with authenticity to your own story and a deep understanding of the university mission and why you want to be part of the MBKU community. Being a competitive applicant in the realm of PA school means you are someone who is studious, driven, personable, and well-rounded. If you can imagine the kind of reassuring, competent, and kind healthcare provider you would want for yourself or a loved one, that is the goal for how to live your life and expand your skills.

Why did you choose MBKU?

There were many reasons I chose MBKU, but my top reason was their emphasis on serving underserved communities and enhancing students’ understanding of the healthcare disparities these populations face. I was looking for a program that truly integrates this value into its curriculum—and so far, MBKU has done exactly that. I’m especially looking forward to participating in a medical mission trip, where we will be providing care to underserved communities in El Salvador. Another example of this commitment is the inclusion of Medical Spanish as an elective in the curriculum. I also love that the curriculum is module based.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My best piece of advice would be to invest your time and energy in organizations that align most with your passions. As a competitive applicant, what truly stands out is long-standing commitment to organizations that reflect the values you want to carry into your career as a healthcare professional.

It is also important to be a well rounded applicant by gaining experiences in areas like leadership, research, non-medical and medical volunteer work, meaningful patient care, and shadowing. For me, what best reflected my passion and values was a shared mission across the organizations I was involved with. Whether through leadership, volunteering or research, my experiences centered on serving underserved communities, which I felt helped reflect the work I wish to continue as a future PA.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Be willing to challenge yourself and learn from each experience! Seek out opportunities you are truly passionate about to demonstrate your commitment to healthcare and service. Be intentional about gaining direct patient care experience and take time to reflect on your growth in each role. Admissions committees are looking for people with purpose, compassion, and resilience, not perfection. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU due to the sincere and nurturing environment I encountered during an information session and throughout my interview process. While it may seem trivial to some, the invitation extended by MBKU for my immediate family to accompany me during my interview for the College of Pharmacy profoundly impacted me. It conveyed that MBKU not only wished for my success but also genuinely cared about my well-being.

The authenticity and commitment demonstrated by the faculty and student ambassadors fostered an immediate sense of connection and reassurance regarding my decision to pursue a graduate degree at MBKU. The institution's strong focus on its mission statement, distinctive programs, vibrant campus life, and unwavering dedication to student success resonated deeply with my personal goals and values. I was enthusiastic about becoming part of a community that emphasized both academic achievement and personal support, making MBKU the perfect choice for my educational and professional journey.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I recently published a book called "Prescription for Success: A RoadMap to Limitless Opportunities." In the chapter titled "Things I Wish I Knew," I emphasize the significance of being kind to ourselves. During my academic journey, I often struggled with self-compassion, which negatively impacted both my mental health and academic performance. It's crucial for future students to realize that they can bounce back from their mistakes. There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to becoming a strong applicant; our success isn't defined solely by our academic records. It's completely normal to retake classes, seek help, and ask questions. I believe that resilience is key to being a competitive applicant, and part of that preparation involves staying connected to the reasons behind our goals.

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU as they were generous with scholarships, small class size for the pharmacy program, along with the people here actually look like they get along. That is why I chose MBKU as I wanted to go to a school that was still competitive but in terms of that were all in this together in the end.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Some advice I would give prospective students about preparing to be a competitive applicant is to be confidence in your skills and yourself. Being confident in yourself will open up a new ball field for you as it shows that you want something and you're actually doing something about it. Along with that, I would also try to gain some experience before applying/attending pharmacy school as it helps you understand more about pharmacy life and what you might want to do in the future.

My journey to pharmacy and finding inspiration from my grandmother

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because it feels like a second home. The supportive faculty, staff, and students, along with the university’s strong focus on collaboration, made it the perfect fit for me. The smaller class sizes, hands-on learning, and team-based approach provide the ideal environment for my growth as a future pharmacist.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

Never give up, even when life feels overwhelming. I worked multiple jobs while studying, and although it was challenging, it taught me resilience and time management. Balancing school, work, and personal challenges is never easy, but if you stay focused, ask for help when needed, and believe in yourself, you can overcome obstacles and achieve your goals.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

Outside of school, I love driving to new places and exploring new areas. I also enjoy watching thought-provoking movies because they give me new perspectives and inspire me with different stories.

What is a fun fact about you?

I speak four languages, which allows me to connect with people from different cultures and has shaped my identity.

I took a gap 6 months before doing pre-requisites for grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I love that this community seemed to be tight-knit, as if everyone knew each other. Coming from a public school, not only was it hard to get responses from the faculty as there were so many students, but it also felt difficult to connect with people. When I interviewed and toured at MBKU, everyone felt so welcoming and nice, and the faculty actually responded to my emails within an hour. It was a refreshing feeling and I knew MBKU would be a great choice for me.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would say to build up their resume. If they have the option of working as a pharmacy technician/become a certified pharmacy technician, then I would highly encourage that. It really helped me to gain the experience and knowledge I needed to decide to apply for pharmacy school as well as showing these programs that I am capable of becoming a pharmacist.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I like to play video games and read short stories online. I also like to write my own short stories.

What is a fun fact about you?

I was once able to do a headspin when I learned how to breakdance.

Advice I would give a prospective student on how to be a competitive applicant is to be clear on the "WHY" you are applying or choosing this field and never forget the reason.

What are you involved in on campus?

For this school year I am involved in CPhA as VP of Membership and Worthy Master-at-Arm of Phi Delta Chi -Delta Lambda

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

Living at home and commuting

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because from the moment I connected with the school, it just felt right. The environment was warm, welcoming, and supportive—it felt like I was being embraced with open arms. As someone who really values connection and community, I found that my personality naturally aligned with the culture here. I didn’t feel like just another applicant; I felt seen and valued.

One of the things that stood out most to me was the strong teacher-to-student ratio. I knew I wanted to be in a program where I could build meaningful relationships with faculty, get personalized guidance, and not feel lost in a crowd. That kind of support makes a huge difference in both learning and confidence.

Beyond that, MBKU felt like the perfect fit not just academically, but personally. It’s close to home, which allows me to stay grounded and connected to my support system. But more than that, it aligned with where I am in life—both physically and mentally. It just clicked for me in a way that no other school did, and I knew this was where I was meant to be.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My biggest piece of advice is to be authentic. A lot of applicants feel like they need to sound overly polished or say what they think admissions wants to hear—but that can actually make it harder to describe who you really are. Instead, let your personality shine through. Don’t be afraid to show your true self—your passions, your goals, even your struggles. That’s what makes you relatable and memorable.

It’s important to speak from the heart and be honest about your journey. Trying to overplay your experiences doesn’t make you stand out more—it just makes things feel less genuine. Schools are looking for people who are self-aware, driven, and real. So focus on what makes you unique, and trust that being yourself is more than enough.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

Outside of school, I have a lot of interests that keep me balanced and energized. I’ve been a Polynesian dancer since I was three, and I’m currently part of a luau show group where we perform at events—and I even cosplay as Moana for kids! Performing and engaging with others has always been a big part of who I am, and I love sharing that joyful, extroverted side of myself.

I also braid hair on the side, which lets me connect with people one-on-one. I really enjoy the conversations and the creative process—it’s relaxing but social, which is the perfect mix for me. When I’m looking to fully unwind, I love going on waterfall hikes or doing LAGREE, a form of Pilates that I’ve added into my weekly routine. It’s a great way to stay grounded, both physically and mentally.
Whether I’m performing, connecting with others, or out in nature, I always try to make space for the things that bring me joy and help me recharge.

What is a fun fact about you?

I have been a Polynesian dancer since I was 3 and I do hair braiding on the side! Waterfall hikes and the beach are my go to activities!

Ask me about

First generation immigrant, gap year, completed a master's degree, and moving to OC for school.

Why did you choose MBKU?

Compared to other schools, MBKU stood out to me the most. From the moment I walked in, I noticed the diversity among faculty, staff, and students, which reflected the school’s values of inclusion and aligned with mine. The genuine warmth and welcoming atmosphere immediately put me at ease and allowed me to be myself. Academically, I appreciated MBKU’s integration of didactic and clinical learning, which supports applying knowledge in real-world settings. I was also encouraged to see faculty pharmacists leading research efforts, showing that pharmacists are represented in advancing the field. Additionally, MBKU’s board pass and residency match rates give me confidence that I’ll have the foundation and support to explore my career path. Even small details, like the well-maintained, modern campus, showed me the school reinvests in its students.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My biggest advice is to genuinely enjoy what you are learning and be passionate about your career goals. The process takes time, effort, and sacrifice, and what will keep you going is staying connected to your “why” and reminding yourself of the bigger picture. It is also important to prioritize wisely, knowing when school needs your full focus and when it is okay to take a break. Surround yourself with people who truly support your goals and encourage you to stay on track. Time management is essential, and while it looks different for everyone, breaking tasks into smaller pieces helps prevent procrastination and burnout. Lastly, take care of your mental health. Even small habits like walking, journaling, or setting aside time to decompress can make a big difference. You do not need to be perfect to be competitive; what matters most is being intentional, resilient, and open to growth throughout the process.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

During my free time, there are several activities I enjoy. My absolute favorite is cuddling up under a blanket and reading different fantasy novels, especially on a rainy day. When I prefer to be out and about, I enjoy going to the gym, doing mat pilates, or going on hikes when the weather permits. I am also attempting to perfect my at-home coffee station, so I like to explore different cafes with my friends to try new coffee and matcha recipes for inspiration.

What is a fun fact about you?

A fun fact about me is that I know the song, "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen by heart.

Ask me about

Being a 1st Generation student, taking a gap year

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose to attend MBKU COP because the interactions I had with students and faculty were positive and left a lasting impression. The strong emphasis on the MBKU “Pharmily” showed how tight-knit the community was coupled with the camaraderie and respect between the current students and the faculty. I felt that MBKU was truly a community where everyone is eager to support each other to foster growth and success.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My advice is to go at your own pace with your goals in mind. Not everyone will walk the same path as you so there is no reason to constantly compare yourself to others. If you try to match someone else's pace, that may negatively impact your process.

I personally used the gap years to work in a pharmacy and gain valuable experience while giving myself time to recover from the loss of my dad. If I were to go straight into pharmacy school after undergrad like my peers, I am positive I would not be doing so well.

What are you involved in on campus?

For this school year, I am Vice President of Phi Lambda Sigma, Secretary of CPhA, and Treasurer of CSHP.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

When I am not studying, I enjoy relaxing with my two cats. I would often go on walks while playing Pokemon Go! I also enjoy cafe hopping to scope out which cafes are good study spots.

What is a fun fact about you?

The day I took in my cats, I named them Sesame and Mochi because I was craving black sesame mochi. (It worked out since one cat is gray and the other is black)

Commuter during grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I choose MBKU because I wanted to build a close relationship with my cohort and other classes. With a small class size that MBKU offers, building close and long lasting relationships with my cohort and faculty is more achievable. Additionally, I really enjoy the quarter system education model. To me, the quarter system assists in developing strong medical providers with its fast pace schedule.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My advice to prospective students is to gain as much experiences in working as possible - whether it is in service and even better if it relates to the program they are applying for. I believe that there are something that you cannot learn from sitting in a classroom. I would also advise that to me, the hardest part is taking that leap of faith in yourself and apply for the program. It doesn't hurt trying, but you would never know if you don't try.

Ask me about

Being an older student with English as a second language and juggling school and family obligations

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because of its proximity to my home community, as I am a mother of two and a caretaker to my older parents. I moved to Orange County when I came to the United States with nothing but the clothes on my back, and received an education from Cal State Fullerton. I knew that I wanted to continue my education here, and give back to the community that uplifted me. I also really appreciated MBKU's small class size, which makes for a very familial environment. I love being able to develop lifelong bonds with my faculty and peers.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I would advise prospective students to not only try to maintain good grades, but also to develop genuine interest in their core classes. They are the foundation to what they will learn in future, and having a solid understanding and desire to further that knowledge goes a long way. I would also recommend to have previous experience in customer service, (if possible, in a pharmacy setting) as being able to communicate complex ideas and having interpersonal skills is essential in healthcare.

What are you involved in on campus?

Vice President of Drug Research Club

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

I love spending time with my family. An ideal day would start off by walking or jogging on the sandy beach with my husband in the morning, then cooking lunch all together at home, and crocheting with my daughters while watching a movie in the evening.

What is a fun fact about you?

I love walking bare feet on sandy beaches.

1st Generation Grad School & Went straight from undergrad to grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because I felt comfortable during the interview process. There wasn't any pressure to try to be someone else; I was myself the whole time. I felt welcomed by the Student Ambassadors and the professors who were interviewing. I also resonated with the small class size and being able to speak with professors. I knew that within this program I wouldn't feel like I was competing with others.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

I recommend doing leadership, joining a pre-pharmacy club if you can, and getting Bs and up. It also helps to get to know your undergrad professors as they will be the ones writing up your letter of recommendations. In addition, I recommend writing your Personal Statement early and have many people review it, and prepare for interviews.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying?

During my free time, I like to weightlift, play videogames, hang out with my friends, try new matcha shops, cook and play with my cat!

Went straight from undergrad to grad school

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose MBKU because the community here is very welcoming, energetic, and kind. Coming from a large undergraduate campus, I was craving a more intimate connection with students and staff. MBKU was the best fit for me because it offered a quality pharmacy program, small class size, and a tight-knit sense of community. I also feel the opportunities MBKU offers will help me grow as a student, person, and future pharmacist.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

My biggest piece of advice would be to give yourself the time and space to truly be a competitive applicant. You need to invest plenty of energy into making your application the best it can be, showcasing your merits and your authentic self. Since pharmacy admissions are rolling, it is very important to have preparation time for application and interview season as soon as possible. I know prospective students have a lot on their plates, whether it be finishing up undergraduate studies, working, or otherwise, so setting aside time for application and interview preparations is crucial for success. Good luck!

In my free time, I like to collect cute trinkets, watch horror movies, and do pixel art! I also love spending quality time with people I care about.

Commuting during grad school, Being involved on campus

Why did you choose MBKU?

I chose to attend the COP program at MBKU because of the distance to travel where it is close enough to home and I can visit my friends and family on a weekly basis. This school offers an abundance of opportunities to network and make connections with the organizations that have already been established i.e. CPhA, CSHP, AAPP. I really appreciate how close-knit and genuine the COP faculty are with their students. It demonstrates a sense of community and belonging for anyone that joins this program. It’s always reassuring to know that I’m able to go to any of the professors with a problem / question / conversation and to know they’ll make time to listen to what I have to say. The best part would be my classmates because we always plan for hangouts whether it be bonfires, barbecues or study sessions. I am absolutely honored to be part of the COP 2027 class and could not have asked for a better group of friends.

Any advice for Prospective Students?

All work and no play makes you a very stressed out person. It’s fine if you want to prioritize your studies and job (if you have one), but never forget to take a break. Imagine you’re driving: you’re gonna be able to get to the destination safely as long as you’re well-rested. But if you’re not even able to open your eyes to see the road, then you’re bound to crash and burn. Don't hesitate to reach out to anyone - be it a faculty member, an upperclassmen or your fellow classmates.
