So you are ready for the big move!

Here are some tips and tricks to make the process as smooth as possible.

Housing

When looking for housing, it is useful to make a personalized list of your criteria for this new place you call home. Make this list as specific as possible with absolute and optional conditions. I was looking for a two-bedroom one-bathroom pet-friendly apartment within walking distance to school with hardwood floors, an on-site or in-unit laundry room, and a designated parking spot. Once you have your list, it is time to visit the potential homes. My roommate and I were unable to apartment hunt in the area prior to moving in, so we did all of our research online. However; if your situation allows, it is beneficial to visit in-person. A substitute is arranging virtual tours with the leasing office or landlord for the particular units of interest. Do not feel afraid to ask if they can turn on the faucets, open the cabinets, or give you a closer look! Additionally, talk to your them about necessary expenses like internet, electricity, water, and home insurance. Once you have decided on a space, it is time to sign the lease. Each housing situation is different but expect to provide tax and income documents upon signing.

Car

Transportation is crucial in the sunny state. While there are public transits available, the easiest way around is by car. Some classmates purchased a car upon arrival, others drove from their hometown, but I shipped mine through an auto transport company that serviced from my location directly to Orange County. Google reviews is your best friend when it comes to choosing an auto transport company that fits your needs. A bonus when it comes to shipping your car is the ability to load your belongings in the trunk. As a result, I cut down my costs and did not have to mail any boxes. I simply requested a quote, set up a meeting time with my driver, loaded my car onto a double decker trailer, and waited for its safe arrival to my apartment. It took approximately three days en route and was dropped off at my apartment’s parking garage without an issue.

Packing

A big perk about living in California is the amazing weather! I was happy to leave all of my thick puffers in Indiana and packed lots of summer-friendly clothes. I would recommend bringing some light coats for the chillier nights and winters. Additionally, be sure to have business attire on hand for proficiencies, networking events, interviews, and headshot opportunities. Scrubs are an alternative for business casual attire on proficiency days. Besides clothing, it is important to bring things that spark joy. Do not forget to bring the essentials for your hobbies! If you enjoy hiking, bring your hiking boots. If you enjoy playing guitar, bring your guitar. Also, remember to bring a little piece of home to remind you of how it all started.
