Peer Advice: Nature is Calling

Get outside!

There is something special about getting outside early on a Saturday morning. It’s the different smells that do it for me. I love the cool, salty air by the beach; the dewy, freshness of a park; and the leafy, woody smell of hiking trails. If you aren’t from SoCal then please allow me to show you a few of my favorite places not too far from the MBKU campus that could fill a weekend morning.

Outside where?

First of all, the 57 freeway will become your best friend. It will take you South towards the Beach or North towards the mountains. It’s very convenient! If you feel like taking a nice and easy stroll up a creek and ending at a pretty waterfall (about 2 miles round trip) then Eaton Canyon would be a good pick. Parking is free and the site is cleaned very often. They have a small visitor’s center with history about the area. There are a few port-o-potties at the trailhead. The trail ends at a 30 foot waterfall that collects in a mini pond that you can cool off in before heading back for brunch.

If you feel like you want a little more of a heavy hitter, try Mt. Baldy. It’s a little over 11 miles that takes about 7 hours round-trip. The views are spectacular at the top. There are restrooms at the trailhead and one about halfway. Pack your water and snacks!

If you’re ever in my city of Whittier, CA, try Turnbull canyon. It’s a quick 1 hour round trip trail. Once you get to the top you get views of LA and Orange county. You’ll see people walking, biking or running up the trail. I love to walk it because you get to see all the bunnies getting a snack early in the day.

Be safe outside.

Before you head out don’t forget to pack enough water, snacks, sun block, and Claritin to make the day safe and enjoyable. Check local resources for special considerations about the trails you would like to visit. I use alltrails.com. They have reviews, info about parking, and tons of other trails that you could visit if you need more breaks!

Be at peace inside.

Stress doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Use it as a reminder that your mind needs a break and get outside!
